War of Tristam's Beard

The War of Tristam's Beard lasted only for a week between Varic and his wife Hild. Though they came from different clans, they believed that their love transcended clan duties and married. For a few years, they lived happily on the peninsula known as Tristam's Beard. However, when Varic brought home an infant, his wife was furious. She believed that this was proof that he had been cheating on her, while he argued that he found the infant abandoned and couldn't leave it to die. Hild refused to look after what she believed was an illegitimate child. The next day despite her husband's pleading, she moved into the shed near the tip of the peninsula. It was also beside their only patch of arable land. She declared herself divorced because her husband had cheated and that the shed and farm patch belonged to her and her clan. Angered that his wife would dare consider divorce, Varic went back to his clan and demanded help in making his wife see sense. Half a dozen warriors returned to the homestead with Varic. Frightened and thinking that Varic meant to kill her, Hild sent a pigeon to her family explaining how her husband cheated and now planned to murder her. They sent ten warriors to rescue her, and the two groups faced off near the house. Neither side could see reason, and on the seventh day since Varic brought home the infant, they clashed. One person died from Varic's clan, and two people died from Hild's clan. While burying the dead, Hild saw a small grave for the unnamed infant. Varic revealed that the infant was sickly and died just a couple days after she left. Hild saw that the gods resolved their problem and felt overwhelming guilt at having caused the needless death of three people. In her grief, she threw herself off the edge of the peninsula and drowned.
