Session Report 8: Storming the Darkin Hideout

General Summary

The party awoke in the oasis, after having journeyed halfway home to Sentinel the day before. The awoke to the sound of a singing voice, carrying a gentle melody across the sand dunes. The party waited for the source of the singing to get close, as a traveling swordsmen adorned in magnificent scarlet armor was crooning an old bards ballad of the War of the Red Diamond.    The swordsmens name was Ansei Jarrick Cathen. Ansei Jarrick, held the esteemed rank of Ansei, one of but a select few who trained in the fabled art of sword-singing. The Ansei were said to be able to sing swords into existence, a form of tonal projection, not unlike the Thu’um. The Ansei was travelling to Sentinel as well, as his student was to take part in the Sentinel Arena for tournament held in honour of the Empress Katariah. All of the lords of the province, and various clan leaders would be in Sentinel for the games and so Ansei Jarrick was duty bound to make an appearance.    The offered to share the road with him, share a song and a story along the dusty road. Jarrick shared that he had served in the War of the Red Diamond under the banner of Cephorus Septim, the King of Gilane and later Emperor of Tamriel. Jarrick told a story of a great battle, where he and a few of his men took an entire fortress of Crowns warriors on the March to High Rock. As the party arrived at the gates of Sentinel, Jarrick gave them a special writ bearing his seal, that would gain them entry in the Arena Games. They were to provide this letter to the Arena master at the undercard fights.
Upon arriving in the city, they would immediately make plans to notify the Lord Commander of their findings. At the garrison, Steve would relay the intel they had gathered at the shrine. The Spectres had a hideout in the outskirts slums of the city. It lay underneath a seedy tavern called the Sandy Skeever. Saraad, pleased with the report, offered them a place in the Order of the Candle, a respected fighters guild and protectors of the King. Steve and Aethrondil each would take him up on the offer, becoming apprentices in the order. Cleetus, unsure about making any more long term commitments, told Saraad he would consider the offer.
As Steve and Aethrondil’s first mission, they were to meet with a Protector level guild mate and a squad of Knights and storm the Darkin hideout. Before leaving the garrison, the Lord Commander introduced them to an agent of the Imperial Intelligence Service, otherwise known as The Blades.
The agent was an imperial woman named Knight Sister Solaine, and she was in the city to prepare for the Empress’ arrival. She had been briefed on the situation and would observe the mission in the slums. The party left the garrison with the Knight Sister, and worked their way to the outskirts.
Upon arriving at the Sandy Skeever, it was decided that Jonas would attempt to sneak into the hideout and scout around, donning a disguise to hopefully aid his efforts. Jonas would find a small passageway in the back room that led directly into the cisterns below. He wouldn’t make it very far before finding himself face to face with the spectre leader in her small office.
Letting out a bone-chilling shriek, combat would ensue. The leader of the Spectres would make a quick escape, activating a fail safe and giving the order to destroy everything that couldn’t be safe as the site had been burned. The sewer was slowly flooded with water, as spectres dashed around destroying documents, weapons, and snagging everything of value. Steve would be one of the first to enter the hideout, channeling the Thu’um to wipe out a horde of spectres.
The party would end up deactivating the fail safe, and successfully apprehended a number of the spectres before they escaped. The leader, Ahra, took her own life with a toxic chemical she kept in her mouth. On her person they found a key to a safe in her office which contained a number of documents, including a diary that detailed her contract with the Spectres, and the official contract itself, signed by someone named the Foresaken Emperor. With the documents in hand, the party would return to Lord Commander, giving him the documents to show to the King. Someone had conspired with the Spectres to create chaos and unrest in Sentinel.
The intel was also shared with the Knight Sister Solaine by Steve. Lord Commander Saraad gratefully accepted the mission report, making Steve and Aethrondil, protectors in the Order of the Candle. Steve would gain a small squad of soldiers to command on his missions, while Aethrondil would have an apprentice to aid him. Cleetus, having seen the benefits that order could offer him, decided to become an Apprentice in the order as well, and he was inducted that evening.
The Lord Commander thanked them again for their service to the King and mention to potentially await a messenger for an audience with King Faharajad himself.
After a long evening of combat and discussion, the party would wander back to the Tawil Townhouse where Geoffrey eagerly waited for them. In the middle of the night, Steve would enter Cleetus’ room for a night of a great sexual pass- … for a bro talk. Steve confessed that it was he who killed those kids in the slums, having used a power he had no idea how to control. He didn’t understand what the power was and was scared to use it more. It was the same power he used in the sewers that night. Cleetus understood where Steve was coming from, and said that they could all figure it out together, cause that’s what best friends do. The heart to heart would end in a loving embr- … a bro hug. The party all retired for the evening, with thoughts drifting towards the grand games ahead and a potential Royal audience
