Magic Storms

In our world, droplets of moisture gather in the sky and can, ultimately, fall as rain. The bare bones theory of this phenomena is not dissimilar to the process behind magical artifacts and magic storms. When large quantities of magic gather in a single location, the natural reaction is rather intense.   When the focal point is an object, it creates a magical artifact. The stability of these artifacts depends on a number of factors including the quality of magical essence, how well the artifact contains these types of essences, and with what (or whom) the artifact interactes. Here, we'll discuss what happens when it all goes wrong.   Magic storms manifest in two ways: 1) a magical artifact cannot contain the gathered essences and 2) magic gathers with no clear item at its center and seeks a conduit.

Formation of Magic Storms

Created by Artifact

A magical artifact is any non-living item with essences of magic poured into it. When the item has reached its magical capacity and excess magic is continually drawn to the location, strange storms begin to occur. These storms can be related to the environment or the item itself. For example, if an object has a different electrical charge compared to the world around it, it might produce a lightning storm. For another example, if the artifact is rotted wood, the magical energy expelled might be necrotic in nature. Living beings hit by these bolts of energy will need clerical care immediately.

Created without an Artifact

When magic gathers without a item to focus on the weather is usually the deciding factor on how the storm manifests. If it's already raining, the storm elevates to a derecho. If the weather is creating spirals of wind, tornadoes or hurricanes may spawn.

Types of Magic Storms

Normally, magic storms manifest in ways that relate to the environment.

Notes on Magical Essences

  1. In this context, magical essences are just the type of magic. These essences are analogous to Schools of Magic.
  2. Contrary to popular belief, magic in its truest form doesn't have any essences within it. These essences are infused into the magical energy from the environment and magic users. Powerful wielders can filter essences out of the magic and reshape the magic to fit their own essences and style.

Magic Centered on a Living Being

In most cases, the entity takes on new characteristics and abilities, like the Corpse Woods, Red Swarm, and Spider Sphynx Cats. However, there is a hot debate at the Research Center that magic centered on a person could turn into a storm. If so, there are two outcomes.

The first possiblitiy, the person loses control and arcs of lightning leave their body from various limbs, targeting the world around them without known direction. Without bodily protections, the person is a husk, if there is any body left at all. There are hypotheses surrounding how personal essences would flavor the lightning. However, these cases are rare and hard to study.

The second possibility, the person takes control of the magic and creates a storm of their own. The amount of power and control necessary for such a feat is currently a research topic at the Clearsparks' school near La Chiave a Croce.
