Lowin Baruntacht

The lands of this Baruntacht, under the trust of the Lowin family line, are for the most part wild and a place common and goodly folk would avoid. The roads are kept as safe as possible, as are the rail lines, but most of the land is that in the area of the Shivering Wood, a thick coniferous forest that seems the realm of long forgotten creatures and magics. The people here, from the leadership all the way down to the peasantry, are of a more conservative-traditionalist bent, even with the growing industrialization of the age. They are fearful of advancement or change, because such things can mean expansion. To them, the Shivering Wood is not a frontier to be tamed, but a seemingly living entity to be respected and feared. Many would claim this as nothing as folly, however ware your words carefully, for the Shivering Wood is largely unexplored and may hold many dark and terrifying secrets.

Geography

Contained here are brief descriptions and hooks about the various locations of importance within the Baruntacht, including settlements. The settlements populations are listed here as well in brackets beside their name. Only the larger towns are listed here, for the smaller settlements, simply see the map and the pins therein.

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATIONS OF NOTE:
Copperhead Mountains: This small range of mountains on an island off the coast of the Glacial Sea has its name because of a rich copper vein struck here by a prospector. The vein, though rich, does not match the name he gave the mountains, which was likely a simple choice of marketing on the part of the prospector to drum up enough investment to fund a small mining expedition, which has grown into a thriving community. Despite this, the vein is rich and it is the belief of most, rightly or wrongly, that this range shall provide a long lasting and stable source of copper for decades or even centuries.

Camps of the Forgotten: This is a place that a general area, but no location is truly known. For none whom have ever attempted to map the region fully, seem to return. Indeed the name implies and warns, locals telling fanciful tales of cursed folk made to wander and starve, becoming something less than human and less than alive, or other tales of strange evil hearted 'forest spirits', whom delight in tormenting the innocent and the lost.

Silver Falls Ruins: This is a well recorded spot, and is the remains of dwarven mining complex and town built within the mountain itself, though some small parts and structures were built above ground. The falls still exist, though no water comes from them now. None fully know what happened, but all know that whatever it was, only a handful of the nearly seven hundred people whom lived there less than twelve had escaped with their lives, and all of these, even the dwarves, died only a handful of years later. It has been nearly a hundred years since the last of those survivors died, and though no one has attempted anything as foolish as an expedition or treasure raiding party yet, younger generations of 'heroic' minded folk, especially those of the road, have been heard to discuss such foolish ideas. Eventually one of them will find enough like minded fools and attempt something, it is inevitable.

TOWNS/CITIES:
Millhold (7351): This large and fortified town on the banks of the Glacial Sea, is the principal settlement and seat of power within the Baruntacht. It is here the Lowin family holds their court, and here is where they centralize their power. The community gets its name for the primary industries of the settlement. Lumber, pulp and paper products. The trees all around the city are far game, as far as the Lowin family feels like projecting might of arms to help woodsmen feel 'safe'. Boats, river barges and shallow hulled sailing ships known as 'lake skippers' are another financially significant export. The town is well fortified, as one might expect, and is built simply, of imported stone and timber, leaning mostly towards timber of course. Things are built in a traditionalist style, and even the rail-yard within the town is one that exists begrudgingly, for Fiolag Lowin is a staunch traditionalist, almost to the point of extremism. He and his sons are not well liked by his 'subjects' as he puts it, and the town has a very tense demeanor.

Port Charcoal (3127): This isolated town of hardy fishing folk and woodsmen make their home here by living heavily off the land, as one might expect, with fish, crustaceans and water birds, along with nuts and other edible plants making up a large portion of their diet. Their name comes from the fact that charcoal is one of their largest exports, specifically for cooking, or for forges and smithies, as the lower burning temperature is valuable in working some softer metals.

Port Pick (3724): This isolated settlement is the large mining town built along the northern edge of the Copperhead Range. As one might expect from such a town, the majority of folk in one way or another work within the framework of the copper mining process and industry. However whilst saying this, one will be surprised, given the towns remote location and rather modest population count, just how high end the living here is. This wealthy status comes from the mining, of course, as copper, though not near as valuable as other precious metals, is in high demand for the minting of coin, if nothing else. Copper is not all that is mined here of course, there are many byproducts as one might expect and any of these that can be used or sold for profit of course are handled accordingly as well.
