The sealing of the passages under the Frigid Summits by the Elven elder mage Aeryndal marked the passage from the first age to the second.
The Elven elder mage Aeryndal, after proving his worth in sealing away the horrors of the underworld, ascends to Godhood and becomes the patron of all Elves.
In the wake of The Sealing, the Dwarven and Gnomish nation of Rolthon splits in two, creating the two separate nations of Xartha and Narton.
The first Dormunean Empire spanned the entire continent. Lasting over four hundred years, and taking in all major species of Ipath, the Dormunean Emperor Lysandor ruled with an iron fist, forging a reputation as a ruthless but efficient leader. Not until his long and unnaturally delayed death did the Empire start to falter.
Lysador, the 400 year Emperor, after an unnaturally long life, is found dead under suspicious circumstances. The details of his death have been lost to history, but some researchers still search for the answer. His passing destabilized an empire that wasn't prepared for a power vacuum after four centuries of steady rule.
After breaking away from the Dormuneans during the fall of Lysandor's Empire, Halflings create their own small nation north of the seat of the Empire. Londor is a poor and isolated nation for generations after this, struggling to compete with a more power and affluent neighbor on both sides.
Xailzareth, a powerful Orcish warchief, is able to muster enough forces that were scattered to the western peaks of the Frigid Summits to create a small army. Wanting to secure the Volcano north of the Caked Hills, Xailzareth charges into the western flank of Narton, trying to secure the borders. He manages to catch the Gnomes off guard, and holds this land for over forty years, until the Gnomish warrior Helena slays him in battle. This shatters the confidence of the Orcish hordes, and they retreat back to the base of the western mountains.
In a coordinated attack between Narton and Londor, the Gnomish and Halfling militaries attack the Volcano that Xailzareth has claimed as his base of operations. The battle is bloody and brutal, claiming many lives on both sides. The Halfling commander is killed before reaching the peak of the mountain, but Helena reaches the top with a small contingent of her best soldiers. By the end of the battle, only Helena and Xailzareth remain alive, and their duel lasts what feels like ages, until finally Helena's blade pierces through Xailzareth's heart. Legends say his final words were "Well done, little warrior".
After receiving information from their spies and scouts that the Dormuneans are preparing for another conquest, the scattered tribes of the elves in the south forest decide to band together. They forge an alliance, one that would unite them together in a single cause. This alliance would create the bond that would later cause the inception of the Elven nation of Ryela.
Long held under the oppressive claw of Dormunean rule, the indentured Humans and Human slaves of the Empire band together, forming a small, and ineffective, fighting force on the western banks of the Millsea Depths. The rebellion lasts about two and a half years before the Empress Yulanthra's inquisitors discover and capture the ringleaders and put them to the sword. This prompts a swift and unconditional surrender from the remaining insurgents. Treatment of Humans in the Empire worsens for several years after this.
The newly formed Elven alliance calls it's leaders together to discuss a sensitive matter. Long ignored, and left to their own devices in their forests, the Elves never had much need to oppose them before. However, with the increasingly horrid treatment of Humans and other species of Ipath, the majority of Elves begin to think that non-involvement is no longer an option.
In the wake of the Elven alliance's support for Human rebellion and resistance, the Empire clamps down, and starts to send troops into the southern forests. Seizing this momentum, Emperor Galrus orders invasions into Londor as well, and secures the western bank of the Millsea Depths. Londor offers a conditional surrender, which is rejected, and they're conquered. Narton pulls back to the northern settlements, defending from the Orcs to the west while Xartha holds off the Empire from the South. Dormune briefly captures Khorheim for a twelve year period, from 1352 to 1364, but the Xarthan regroup and march out to retake it. Eventually, a coalition of Humans, Elves, and Halflings join forces in 1664 to storm the gates of the Imperial Capital and assassinate the sitting Emperor, Halthius. This group takes devastating casualties, but succeeds, breaking the occupation by forcing the Empire to call it's forces back to the homeland to defend the seat of the Emperor.
Many years after helping to overthrow the second empire, the Elves of the forest honor their God by naming their great forest after him, deeming it Aeryndal's Refuge. At the same time, the leaders of the Elven alliance decide that forming an official state is in the Elves' best interest, and name the alliance Ryela. Not much changes in the way of governance, but all in the alliance are united under one banner symbolically, for whatever that is worth.
Giving themselves ample time to clear the area and oust any remnants of Imperial troops, the surviving Humans of the second empire, with the help of the Elves, found several settlements on the western side of the Millsea Depths. While they could've formed it earlier, the Humans wait until 1684, in the sixth month on the twelfth day, exactly five hundred years after the start of the Second Dormunean Empire, to officially found Taleria, the new lands of the Humans.
The Dormunean Empire uses the threat of their military might to coerce Londor, Xartha, and Narton into an uneasy alliance with them, unifying the North together with Dormune in what is supposed to be a partnership, but is so in name only. In reality, Dormune uses this treaty as a shield, keeping the north from moving against them under threat of invasion from the other three nations in the "alliance", allowing them to focus on Taleria and Ryela to the south.
Almost a year after the founding of the Northern Alliance, Ryelan and Talerian representatives meet at the border to create an alliance of their own, fearing that Dormune will be able to isolate and dominate them one by one if they don't work together.
Following what is misinterpreted as an attack on a Talerian border outpost, the Talerian-Ryelan Alliance accuses Dormune of breaching established borders and attacking a sovereign territory. Dormune denies involvement in the incident, but nobody, including the members of the Northern Alliance, agree. Dormune calls for their northern allies to join with them, but they refuse. They will not march against Dormune, either, but that is the extent of their cooperation. In different times, this refusal to help may have invoked Dormune's wrath, but they can ill afford to fight on two fronts. The combined might of Talerian cavalry in the open field, combined with the defensive strength of Ryelan mages and archers, is too much for the rank and file Imperial Infantry to overcome, and what was thought to be a simple, quick invasion by Dormune into the south to quell the troublesome duo dragged on into a war that would last for nearly four hundred years.
The bloodiest battle of a thousand year long war, no easy feat, took place on the southern shores of the Millsea Depths, on the border between Dormune and Taleria. Taleria, seeking to end the war finally as it had so many times before, plans one more attempt at sailing across the depths to land on the shores of the Imperial capital with a force of Talerian knights and Ryelan mages. Somehow, word of this plan reaches the Emperor, Yothran. He, fed up of the stalemate that he and his predecessors have been unable to break, personally leads a force of Imperial soldiers to the staging site with a contingent of pyromantic sorcerers meant to set their ships ablaze before they can leave shore. When the two forces meet, both sides realize that the other has more strength than previously realized, and it turns into the determining factor of the war. After years of battles and skirmishes on the borders, neither side able to take and hold territory for long, this is the first time that both sides bring full force to bear, and what ensues is a catastrophe for both sides. Yothran is slain, both sides take monumental casualties, and those survivors that tried to flee aboard the ships were burned alive as the Dormunean sorcerers set the ships alight. Technically, the Southern Alliance "won" the day, as the Emperor's second in command ordered a fighting retreat on the morning of the third day of fighting, but both sides were depleted and their moral shattered. The following week a ceasefire was called for, ending a four hundred year conflict and the third attempt at a continental Dormunean Empire at a stalemate.
On the site of the bloody battle, a mere few months after it's end, representatives from Taleria, Ryela, and Dormune come together to break ground on a new settlement, the Free City of Abbaroth. A place of refuge for all peoples of Ipath, this would stand as a symbol to all of the hope that all the fighting can be put behind us, and together we can forge forward to a brighter future. Construction of the city, at least it's most important fundamental parts, takes only a week longer than initial estimates, and opens to settlers and travelers in early 2164. Before long, Abbaroth is seen as a beacon of independence, freedom, and opportunity to all those seeking a fresh start. As such, it has become a haven for free thinkers, artisans, artists, adventurers and mercenaries, and unfortunately criminals as well.
The five-hundredth anniversary of Taleria's founding marks the beginning of both the Ipath Defense Force and Adventuring around Abbaroth campaigns.
