Peleda
This species of giant owl-like creatures live in the far northern icy wastelands of Dalla. Peleda are thought to be the source of the owl's wisdom, and many make pilgrimages to the wastelands in hopes of encountering a Peleda that they may ask a question to. Peledas are as likely to kill a humanoid as talk to it, although this does not appear to stop those who are most desperate for answers.
The Peleda have been around for as long as anyone can remember. Several Dallai folktales suggest that Peleda used to venture into the southlands and interact with the people living there. The ancient town of Gabiya even has a story about a Peleda named Salduma who lived among the townsfolk for centuries until he was pushed out by the Karai, beginning a centuries-long resentment between the Gabiyan druidic sect, Degti, and the Karai paladins.
An average Peleda stands about 12 feet tall. They strongly resemble barn owls, except their wings are always either a snowy, glittering white or a deep, flat black depending on whether they reside mainly in the underdark or above ground. Underdark Peleda tend to be calmer and more willing to interact with humanoids. The theory behind this friendlier behaviour is that life is easier in the caverns of the underdark where food is plentiful, as opposed to the northern wastelands, where few creatures live and lifespans tend to be brutal and short.
Peleda speak telepathically, should they choose to speak at all, and any who wish to speak with them will need to have be able to speak with animals. They often speak in emotions rather than words, making interactions with them particularly wrought, depending on what they might have to tell you.
Peleda have long lifespans. Pagapeleda, or underdark peleda, can live upwards of 1000 years. Aukapeleda, or wasteland peleda, tend to live around 800-900 years.
