The Wastelands

The Wastelands extend across the far reaches of northern and western Dalla. Intrepid explorers have attempted to cross them, but as yet have not been able to report back after finding the other side, if indeed they did find the other side.   The Northern Wastelands are vast stretches of territory that are covered in ice and snow. Very few creatures live in this harsh climate, but there are some notable denizens, such as the Peleda, dire wolves, dire rats, and fey mice. Giant penguins live along the coastline. There are rumours of enormous creatures living in the northern seas, but most ships that stray t oo far north disappear, so this is exceedingly difficult to confirm.   To the West are The Wastes. The Wastes have a rich history for the magic users of Dalla, as they are known to have powerful magic coursing across theiir windswept plains. The Wastes appear to be grasslands, but explorers note that the farther you go into them, the more disoriented you become. the sky is always cloudy. There is no sun. There is no moon. There are no stars. It always seems to be twilight in The Wastes. Tornadoes are common. Many say that these tornadoes appear to follow any travellers that stray too far into The Wastes. Survivors credit their survival to reaching the edge of The Wastes before the tornadoes caught up to them. If this is true, then it stands to reason that the risk to travellers will only increase the further into The Wastes one goes.   At the edges of The Wastes there are a few lighthouses, built and maintained by survivors of the tornadoes. Most lighthouse keepers are reluctant to speak with historians, but the ones that do, like Rustas Senukas, claim to have great powers and to be maintaining the lighthouses on the off chance that they may bring home a survivor of great importance who will perhaps save the world or some other such nonsense.
"There are few survivors of the howling winds of The Wastes, but I am one. The Magic came to me in the eye of that swirling catastrophe. I saw everything I needed to see and learned everything I needed to learn. Some say I am wasting my talents here in Laukai Lighthouse, but they are wrong. I know what I need to know, and therefor I do what I need to do. My light guides wanderers home, and if they survive the winds like I once did, then perhaps they will go on to greater things. Ask me why I know this, you silly fool." -Interview with Rustus Senukas, survivor of the tornadoes of The Wastes
