The world of Tavarian is heavily run by the more "monstrous" races in d&d such as Orcs, Kobolds, Goblins, Gnolls ETC. There are still factions of these creatures that are evil and continue to worship their evil gods/demon lords but the overall population are reasonable and intelligent.   All humanoid creatures (Except for those of fey decent) are a direct descendant of Giants and Dragons due to this, humanoids born today are born with either a Dragons mark or Giants mark and then an ability associated with that mark due to which lineage is stronger within their bloodline (However, it is still possible to be born with a giant's mark when all of your family has Dragon just uncommon) it is also possible to be born without a mark which leaves you with none of the powers associated with that mark.
