Chief Scientist

A Chief Scientist is the political leader of the Commonwealth Front of Arcadian Science, The Northern Alliance, or The Southern Alliance, and responsible for governing these Isolationist, scientifically-minded factions in all matters relating to law, public works, expeditionary and research interests, and diplomacy.

Qualifications

Chief Scientists are usually only considered if they are holders of a doctorate in any scientific field of study, with most having been active researchers before running to be elected for the role. Despite the larger than average pool of people eligible for this role in the factions that use this form of governance, the number of people who apply to be considered are very slim; the role of Chief Scientist is demanding at the best of times, and an emphasis is placed on governance and leadership rather than scientific study. Therefore, it is common for those who run for Chief Scientist to be passionate about leading their faction and guiding it towards a better future.

Requirements

Technically, anyone with a doctorate in a scientific field and that is over the age of 25 can run for Chief Scientist, although candidates are generally only taken seriously if they are well-established scientists with a respectable amount of research authored by them. It is also a huge bonus in credibility if they have had experience leading successful research projects and expeditions, as this proves that they have what it takes to motivate people and foster success. On a faction-by-faction basis, Chief Scientists have different values expected of them by the electorate depending on where they come from. Whereas Commonwealth citizens tend to look for a leader who represents stability, security, and careful progress, Alliance citizens from the north and the south prefer to see someone who is a pillar of the community and passionate about the environment take up the mantle of Chief Scientist. The Southern Alliance in particular has also elected more technology scientists to the role than the other factions, who tend to value those in biological or chemical sciences more. This is largely attributed to The Southern Alliance relying more heavily on technology, particularly the solar arrays which power their settlements, than their counterparts, despite their Eco-Isolationist leanings.
