Expedition Leader

An expedition leader is a person who has been assigned by their native faction (or has assigned themselves, for independent endeavours) as the head of an expeditionary party, usually in a scientific research capacity but also for a variety of other reasons as well, especially in the spheres of security and engineering. People chosen for this role are usually highly experienced in their field, and are responsible for the welfare and conduct of their team, as well as the logistical and navigational aspects of the expedition. They typically have the honour of being able to handpick their team, although expeditions that are not independently-funded may have restrictions on this, such as the list of personnel being vetted by a department head or even the government, depending on the nature of the expedition. Serving under an expedition leader is the expedition's XO (executive officer), who takes up the role of second in command and is usually someone the leader can trust implicitly to help them with advice on the best course of action and to look after the rest of the team. Both of these roles are temporary, being solely used during the course of an expedition and removed from the bearers upon their return or when the expedition officially comes to an end.

Qualifications

Expedition leaders do not necessarily need formal qualifications to undertake the role, but having plenty of experience in the field is a major requirement. This usually means having been a part of many expeditions in the past and possibly serving as an expedition's XO on a few occasions. Depending on the nature of the expedition, of course, some formal qualifications may be highly beneficial; a scientific expedition with a goal to monitor a particular species will be greatly helped if the expedition leader is an expert and knows the best places to find the species, as well as how to conduct themselves around it. Having an intimate knowledge of the terrain the expedition will be moving through is also a requirement.
