War of the Air

"The skies above were ruled once more by the birds and dragons, and not by us mortals. So should the way of the world. Let us remember the lessons taught to us this day." - Unknown Address at a ruins in Falvona

With such power over the heavens, old information and knowledge created to raise massive cities into the air used to be a commonplace technology. With floating palaces and other large cities moving about the world as they pleased, they grew complacent. With such catalysts as the sub-deity Necrona and her floating necropolis, the great floating cities of the past went to war, and all fell to ruin, scattered over the world as remnant remains of what once was.

The Conflict

Prelude

The building tensions of these floating cities came about when territory disputes began to arise, despite their ability to move and shift freely over the air as they pleased.

Deployment

Many of the cities themselves were used as the main frontal warring point, as floating airships were not many in number, or really comparable in size to the massive structures.

Battlefield

The air above Te'za became filled with violence and death for the first time in history. A strange sight when villages began to watch falling rock eclipse into massive ruins that crumbled over the entirety of the landscape.

The Engagement

Great battles waged over hundreds of days repeatedly on and off for cycles upon cycles until the last two floating structures crashed into each other. The last floating city of Tempeste was the last to crash into the Lemden Archipelago in Erestia, leaving the air dead and quiet once more.

Outcome

With the war over, no more floating cities existed in the world, leaving everyone once more on the same playing field.

Aftermath

Mages with a longing to travel in the air have sought out and looked for these ruined cities and the magic they once used to fly within the air.

Historical Significance

Historical texts tell of at least 10 floating cities including a necropolis participated in this war. But scholars do not believe on is the location of 9 ruined cities, leaving one potentially still floating somewhere...hidden and safe.

Legacy

A lasting den of ruins and artifacts lay in multiple locations in the world.

In Literature

Stories of flying cities, airships, and great battles above have always astounded the mind of many, and this war is often fantasized for storytelling, and warning of hubris.

Technological Advancement

Great levels of technology and magic were used in this war in high regard. By comparison, likely the most advanced war of the era.
