Oni

... She came upon the warm rocks and saw in the hot waters a figure so large and frightening she frozen in disbelief. She was to find the admirer that had sent her confessions of love, they were to meet by the Onsen near Taturi when Tsuki kisses the horizon. The night sky was the canvas upon which this hulking figure was painted with a frayed brush dipped in blood, never before had Aika seen a Kijin, but her fathers words rang like bells in her head and she took an instinctive step back.   The Oni stood up in the water, its true size now revealed, eyes like burning stars in the night sky, its black and unkempt hair only tamed by two large horns petruding from the forehead. It raised a hand towards the terrified Aika, pleading with a simple gesture for her not to flee, for he was indeed her admirer, and if only she knew the lenghts he had gone for her, how he had saved her father and avenged her brother, she would surely understand...   - Exerpt from: Omura Haru, "The blue and red Oni"
Oni, also known as Kijin, variously translates as Fiend, Demon, Daemon, Devil, or Evil Spirit, are monstrous horned humanoids who are found in countless stories and myths. They tend to be the enemies of mankind and are generally depicted as roguish villains. They are large and scary, standing taller than the tallest man, and sometimes many times that. They come in many varieties but are most commonly depicted with a red or blue skin, wild hair, two or more horns, and fang-like tusks. Other variations exist in different colors and with different numbers of horns, eyes, or fingers and toes. They wear loincloths made of the pelts of great beasts and wield Kanabos made of Hard-wood or iron.   While many believe Oni to be one specific race, and often accuse devil spawn (Tieflings) of being Oni, few actually exists after being hunted to near extinction by Samurai Ryōshi. The ones that still remain are descendants from the first Oni that terrorized Taiyomida, and they are known as Oni-born; cursed with the terrible visage of the Oni but few of their supernatural abilities.

Oni may sire children with other humanoids, such children are often born with the Oni Curse.

Ecology and Habitats

Yomi; remote mountains, caves, islands, abandoned fortresses

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

Early Oni were extremely cunning and wielded powerful Occult magic, and those that became Oni through evil acts retained their intelligence past the transformation but became malevolent and paranoid.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

True Oni have perfect darkvision and even those born with the Oni curse are known to gain this supernatural gift. They also have strong affinity for Occult magic and curses.

True Oni (Kijin)

True Oni are large-sized humanoids with red or green skin and large horns and tusks. They are either born in hell or transformed from evil Humanoids who are beyond redemption.

Oni-born (Onitzen)

Cursed with Oni ancestry, these humanoids only gain a few of their ancestral traits, often their skin is either blue or red, and they usually have one or two horns. Their curse protects them from Occult magic but twists their minds with callousness and wroth, thus many Oni-born live short and violent lives.
