The Mayor's Greed

Story Purpose: Fearmongering Moral Story, Told to Children -- "Greed Kills"   Main Character: Dirty Cop
  • "The Greedy Mayor (or similar governmental figure)", called upon a spirit to make a deal for the betterment of his township. Was given too much power and wealth, began to get selfish about it. Time came to pay back his debt, and he attempted to renege on his deal.
  • Murphy Effect: Out of the Frying Pan
  • Mayor has attempted to cheat the spirit out of their deal, unaware that the spirit was Penja'at, god of Evil and Chaos. Through his influence, the greed of the mayor has been spread throughout the town. It's become a city of thieves and cheats. Everything is tumbling down around them. Penja'at appears to give the Mayor a chance to redeem himself and the town. All of his money, and his position of power, in exchange for the town.
  • The mayor asks for time, and Penja'at gives it. But he thinks he can outsmart the 'spirit'. Buries much of his money, arranges for the next mayor to be a sock-puppet for him, then summons the spirit back and 'accepts' the terms of the deal. Things begin to improve, but as soon as the Mayor starts acting through his replacement and digs up any of his cash, things get significantly worse. Buildings collapse. Raiders attack the town. Animals die. Drought comes to the town.   The mayor calls the spirit back and asks why their deal wasn't kept. The spirit wonders the same thing, pointing the man towards the spot where the money was buried. Mayor gets belligerent, claims he stuck to the letter of the deal, the spirit laughs and says he'll do the same. Leads everyone in the town away by exposing the mayor for what and who he is. Everyone abandons him, and he's left alone in a crumbling town with his money, which becomes worthless around him as all he does is hoard it.   Ending: Sole Survivor
