Book III | Chapter I | Grove of the Blight Maker Report
General Summary
Immediately following the events of Book III, Chapter I: Blights & Frights, the party entered the grove of the Meliphia, the Blight Maker, to strike a deal for the return of Aman'da and Silas Morning. Seemingly unaware of Oliver's presence in the tree, Meliphia offered the return of Jack Morning's family in exchange for 4 souls (two being used to replace her assistants that were killed in a previous session). Verst offered the Colmillo del Rey Eterno in exchange for fewer souls; Meliphia said with the dagger, she would only require two souls in exchange for Morning's family.
The party moved away from Meliphia to discuss her offer, and during their discussion became aware that they could hear the sound of voices coming from the music box that Tourmaline had grabbed from Hell or High Liquor in the ruins above. When they turned the music box's volume up, they were able to communicate directly with both Oliver Revilo and Rowan, who were trapped within the tree in the grove. As they discussed means of releasing the souls from the tree, Meliphia became aware of their conversation and initiated combat with the summoning of a number of fungal zombies from the walls of the cavern.
During combat, the party managed to overcome the threats of the grove and overpower Meliphia. With the aid of several well placed shots from Cards, a sophisticated arcane device attached to the tree was deactivated, allowing the trapped souls within to escape and preventing Meliphia from activating the tree during combat. Silas dealt the killing blow to Meliphia, who disintegrated into a flurry of sticks, twigs, moss and mold immediately upon death.
As Meliphia fell, the souls trapped within the tree were free to escape, allowing the souls of Aman'da and Silas Morning to return to their bodies, recently open to them once again by Tourmaline's removal of the arcane sigils upon them. Verst, having heard a loud splash when Meliphia's body disintegrated into the pond behind the tree, dove into the water and discovered a slowly disintegrating green gemstone heart. Upon further inspection, Jack Morning and Cass were able to determine that this gemstone heart was likely the product of a Stoneheart spell, designed to keep Meliphia alive, possibly for eternity.
