Schaade
The Schaade (/ˈʃaːdə/) family is a prominent Preussian House from Essenburg, noted for its involvement in the production of steel, artillery, ammunition and other armaments. The family business, which since 1851 has been known as the Günter Schaade Maschinenfabrik, was the largest company in Western Heremonia at the beginning of the 20th century, and was the premier weapons manufacturer for the Agnomain Bünd during the Great Intercontinental War. The company is a sole proprietorship governed by a family constitution, adopted in 1614, whereby control of the company is passed down within the family through a system of male primogeniture.
The dynasty began in 1587 when a trader named Arnfried Schaade moved to Essenburg and joined the Merchants' Guild. He began buying up vacated properties from families who fled during the Grimfliu Pestilence of 1595 and soon was one of the town's wealthiest men. His descendants produced small arms during the Fifty Years War and eventually acquired fulling mills, coal mines and an iron forge. During the Prinzenkriegen, Rolf Schaade founded the Essenburg Stahlwerk (Essenburg Steel Works) and started smelted steel production in 1793. The company eventually became a major industrial power and laid the foundation for the steel empire that would come to dominate the world for nearly a century. Günter Schaade reorganized the company in 1851 into the Günter Schaade Maschinenfabrik, and in 1859 it was appointed royal arms manufacturer to the Prince of Preussen.
During the early 19th century, Alois Schaade instituted various social and benefit programs for workers at the Schaade manufacturing factories which included on-site education and training, accident and life insurance, low cost housing, hospital care, recreational facilities, parks, schools, bath houses, public houses and department and grocery stores. Widows and orphans were guaranteed an income if their husbands or fathers were killed while working.
