Secret Security Division

The Secret Security Division (Kiltic: An Rannán Slándála Rúnda), commonly called the SSD, is an elite unit of the Mancunian Armed Forces (MAF) responsible for providing transportation, physical security and close personal protection to the Duke and members of the Royal Family, the Chancellor and Government Ministers, and the Chief Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court and the Constitutional Court. Secret Security agents also provide coordinated protection for visiting heads of state. A uniformed unit of the SSD is assigned to the National Senate, and provides security for Senators in the capital, as well as augmented protection as dictated by circumstances.

History

The Division was founded in 1870 as part of the Military Reorganization Act enacted that year. It replaced the old Royal Company of Marksman Sentries (Kiltic: Cuideachta Ríoga de Seolta Marcóirí), who had been responsible for ensuring the personal safety of the Royal Family in times of peace, crisis and war since the 16th century. The first Director of Secret Security was Colonel Hugh McCulloch, who served for 31 years until 1901, retiring with the rank of Major General.

Since it was first established, the SSD has successfully responded to over 1100 “significant security threats” without a single fatality or serious injury to persons under its protection. During that time 46 SSD agents and officers have lost their lives while on active duty. There are currently 550 officers in the SSD Uniformed Service. The number of agents in the Covert Service is considered a state secret.

Uniform

Secret Security officers of the Uniformed Service wear a standard police duty uniform consisting of a white shirt with a black tie, black trousers and a black peaked cap. Secret Security agents of the Covert Service wear “plain clothes” attire that is appropriate for the time and place of their deployment, in most cases a conservative business suit. Often, agents’ clothing is customized to conceal a wide array of equipment and weapons required for protection assignments.

The official service dress uniform of the SSD consists of a black business jacket with a single row of four gold-colored buttons, black trousers, white shirt, white neck tie and a gold-colored beret with the Division’s insignia embroidered on the flash. Rank is indicated by gold cuff insignia on the jacket sleeves. Service ribbons are worn over the left breast pocket.
