Always looking (and willing) to make a deal, the Father of Lies is a shrewd negotiator. Very often, he will get mortals to pledge their very souls to him, relishing the souls of Humanity above all others. Technically not a 'god', he nonetheless possesses all of the abilities of a Greater God, able to grant his priests and clerics their dark abilities and spells from his own well of immense power.
How can the father of lies be the epitome of law? That is a question for the philosophers and bards.

Personal history
Asmodeus' history is a convoluted web of lies built upon misdirection. As far as the scholars at the The Bardic College Campus know, no two accounts are the same. However, what most scholars agree upon follows, quoted from the Master's Thesis of one Trayvon the Lighthearted when he was a grad student.Asmodeus was an angel, a celestial, who fell from grace and favor and was banished to Ba'ator. He was not just any celestial, however. He was the most beautiful, the most divine, the most trusted of servants, known as the 'Morning's First Light', or 'Lucifer' in the ancient celestial tongue. When he 'fell from grace', he fell hard. Wings sheared, and body beaten, he was flung from the heavens, and fell for what seemed like forever, until CRASH!, he smashed through the first layer of Ba'ator, then CRASH! he punctured another layer, and another, and another, his torn and broken body finally pummeling the ninth and last layer of Ba'ator, finally coming to a stop. He spent ages and eons licking his wounds, brooding on his revenge. Then one day, he began to make his moves.
Moving his pieces like a master strategist, his final plans never came to light, even as he convinced the Greater Gods to admit him to their ranks, though he has no power gained from worshippers; instead, he collects the souls of those that sign such a contract, giving his clerics and worshippers their gifts from his own personal well of power. He tricked them into creating Ba'ator for him, and granting him total control over it, as a home base in the war against the demons. They would soon learn their mistake.
You see, Asmodeus is the general of the fiends in their forever war against the demons, ruling from his throne on the ninth layer of Ba'ator. He has absolute authority over the entire plane, changing the landscape or environment to suit his will and purposes with simply a thought. He is the only creature that can promote a fiend to Arch Devil. The rumors and legends of him hearing when you state his name three times are true, and that if you wish to make a deal with him all you need to do is go to a lonely, empty crossroads and call for him three times. Many, many folk do so. Far more than one would think, for he will grant them the power they wish in life, for an unbreakable contract of servitude.

The term "BDSM" springs to mind immediately. And while that is true, to a certain extent, he is also a disciple of The Pleasure Principle And, while he is definitely the "fucker", as opposed to the "fuckee", he can be surprisingly attentive to his partner's needs. It is an ego thing, of course.

He had to tear up Blind Dog Fulton's contract after Lighnin', Blind Dog's protege, beat Vai in a classic 'cutting heads' competition at an indeterminate location. Also, that time he 'fell from grace' still pains him, to this day.
