The Virtue Wars
For a hundred years, the farming communities of Framingham were repeatedly attacked by howling religious zealots out of the north. Calling themselves the Saviours, the barbarians attacked in waves of wild-eyed crossbow wavers. The Saviours 'military' was more a loose-knit band of mercenary groups than an organized State run invasion force. Beginning from more of an idea, more of a religious view, than a political one, the Saviours waged war under the banners of wild animals. Bears, for instance; the odd wolf, here and there. All of them, however, were savage and brutal religious avengers, on a march to exterminate the many enemies of their society.
There was a problem with their reasoning, however, in that none but the extremely militant wanted anything to do with these wars. Considered cultists by the The City of the Lights mainstream, the berserker hordes were looked upon with disdain. With a head-tilt and a sniff, northerners could tell you exactly what they thought of their radical neighbors, although no one could (or would) tell you who they actually were. These 'clans' wore beast masks at their clandestine meetings. Calling themselves the Master Race, the beast clans desired nothing less than the extermination of those who would 'sully' the blood line. Their wars of colonization and acquisition were also thinly-veiled maniacal genocide, and the farmers and peasants working the lands in Framingham were no match for either the brutality, or the weaponry, of their northern neighbors. Indeed, for decades the Framinghamers lived in abject fear. Until, that is, Ursool, the 'Bear King of the North', died. His son, Ursogg took over for his father when the older man, very high on psilocybin tea, mistook a sleuth of bear cubs for his long lost (and unbeknownst) brothers and sisters. The cubs' mother found them all wrestling together in her den, and several days later, a massive bear crap with Ursool's signet ring in it was found. Upon investigation, his gold teeth were found in another, and his dented crown was found being tossed around by a large group of bear cubs, who excitedly greeted the investigators, killing and eating two of them in the process.
Ursool's son, Ursogg, however, was an apple who fell very far, indeed, away from the crazy tree. He immediately personally oversaw the formation of a Guard Formation specifically designated to the borderlands between Framingham and his district in the north. He stamped out the cults ruthlessly, not making any friends among the cultists in the process. Indeed, many of their families swore vengeance, but it was put off permanently after Ursogg built and staffed homes for the children orphaned during what had become known as the Virtue Wars, and grudging respect was granted to the man by even his fiercest critics when he risked his own life for that of one hundred and one peasant laborers in the Caulfield Duel of 5423NG.
