The Mamet
The Mamet is the second highest ranking position in the loosely organized Dyodian Tradition. There are more than one, typically about five to ten at any given time, spread throughout Dyodia. They serve to ensure Dyodian Tradition is followed in a manner consistent with the teachings passed down from the Ancient Ones, though details may vary from Mamet to Mamet, region to region. Despite their differences, they are collectively and singly referred to as "The Mamet," and no Dyodian other than The Mother herself would dare contradict them. They are greatly respected as the people's connection to the Ancient Ones.
Requirements
Much like the position of the Mother, a woman is eligible to become The Mamet through a combination of three things: Ancestry, signs of the Ancient Ones, and study (see the Ordination of the Mother). The Mamet in any Dyodian village will have an entourage of assistants, with many meeting the first qualification, and hoping to meet the second two. Most will not reach their goal, but even life as an assistant to The Mamet is considered a worthy calling and is widely respected by the Dyodians.
Appointment
The Mamet is usually selected by her predecessor, officially named by the Mamets of other regions, and her appointment is then approved by The Mother. Unlike the Ordination of The Mother, there is no special ceremony, as the personage of The Mamet is considered to have continued her existence in this new physicality. However, the funeral rite for the body that was The Mamet is a beautiful, and more public, production than most.
Duties
The Mamet is obligated to provide what is essentially religious education for the Dyodians. It is her responsibility to dole out the knowledge passed down from the Ancient Ones. She also prepares The Mother and any heir to The Mother for their ritual roles. The details of the preparation are kept fairly secret from non-Dyodians. However, their most common rite, celebrated at each planting and harvest festival, includes consumption of a special tea, of which we have recently gained additional information (see The Mamet's Tea).
Her role as purveyor of religion, even priestess if you will, frequently puts her in direct conflict with the Followers of the Divine Duality. Thus, The Mamet is generally kept out of sight from prying eyes, and is difficult for an outsider to locate. It is not unusual for her to be met with violence if found by the Divine Duality. The Mother and the King do their best to prevent such confrontations, as the fallout could be disastrous.
