Session 08: Assault on the Barony

General Summary

Our heroes found themselves planning for an infiltration of Berich Province's barony, the seat of power for the region's baron. After an extended tea-time conversation/magic item shopping hour with Burne, His Most Worshipful Mage of Homlett, the party made their first attempt at an audience with the Baron: name dropping Burne with "Rafael" the head guardsman…
The only issue is that there was no Rafael and Burne's influence seemed far less than the mage had led the adventurer's to believe. However, with some smooth talking, the group was able to seek an audience with Tony, the actual head of the guards. They explained a variation for their reason for wanting to meet with Baron Gregor Whitford, and, after much hesitancy, eventually revealed the existence of their coded note, claiming not to know its full meaning but that it implicated danger for the Baron. They informed the captain of the guard that they were staying at the local inn and were told to wait for a response from the Baron, if any was to actually arrive.
Plan #1 not working as intended, the party made their way back to Homlett, fearful they may have just signed their own death certificates in revealing their existence to the Baron, someone they knew to be a murderer and likely cultist of Vecna. Soon a second plan was formed: catch the thieves guild up to speed on the plot surrounding the Baron and hope they could acquire guard uniforms or some other means of sneaking the party into the barony.
Before the plan could be enacted, or even really pursued too far, the party had some uninvited guests arrive at the inn where they were staying: 20 of the Baron's guards, come to bring them for their "long awaited" audience with him. The group smelled a trap, but felt their was little they could do in the public space of the inn against the armed guards of the local leader, so allowed themselves to be taken.
After nearly a week of unraveling the plot plaguing Berich Province, the group finally met the seeming mastermind: Gregor Whitford, Baron of Berich Province (and Paladin of Vecna). The Baron was an older gentleman with grey hair and mustache. His most notable feature was his left eye, which was a discolored yellow with a slit for an iris. The Baron was happy to finally meet the band of adventurers he had been watching for this past week as they worked to tear apart all he had built. He proved himself to be informed about seemingly all of the party's actions. He offered the party an alternative offer: they had 24 hours to finish off the leaders of the Hand and the Baron promised to let them go on their merry way.
