Hammer of the Gods

The Hammer of the Gods is a magical hammer that was tossed from the heavens 10 years ago. Oddly, this corresponds to around the same time as the fall of the empire, and philosophers have speculated as to the relation. Given the circumstances surrounding the empire, most things of significance are somehow tied to them.
Unfortunately, the Hammer itself seems to radiate magic, mutating and strengthening anything that gets to close. This has resulted in the area becoming incredibly dangerous.
