Nesaraz
Demographics
Most of the soldiers come from Satra and the local Erabaxi, interspersed with other subject peoples of the Empire. The soldiers are a combination of loyal men sent to garrison the fort with the promise of increased pay and men sent there as punishment for crimes ranging from disobedience to thievery. To avoid too many criminals from populating the fort, their numbers are kept in the minority. They are scattered throughout the barracks so they can be kept under control.
Erabaxi tribes occasionally arrive to trade with the eclectic groups of merchants that sell their wares here while on the way to more settled areas of the world. Camp followers are few here, but local women have set up brothels in the area to take advantage of the large customer base. Officers are permitted to bring their wives with them to Nesaraz.
Defences
Nesaraz's wall was constructed with stone imported from where the plains transition into hills and then mountains, carried downstream the local river. A single wall rings the entire settlement, which is made from stones of various colors, giving it an interesting appearance. Four main gates, one facing each cardinal direction, are the only ways inside.
The fortress was built at the only ford in the river for many miles, so it could guard against the incursions of Satra's nomadic enemies.
Infrastructure
The Grass Road ends at Nesaraz's southern gate, providing the fortress a vital link to the empire's central Marusi. The fortress survives through farming the surrounding area, grazing herds of animals, and trading food for other resources.
Architecture
Nesaraz is an anomaly: looming Satrian architecture in the midst of the Erabaxa plains, where people live in tents and hovels of woven grass.
