Transmission & Vectors
There is no vector of transmission for the Voices. Many uneducated people believe the Voices is transmitted by the curses of an evil god or mischievous spirits.
Causes
The cause of the condition known as the Voices is not known, but it has been observed to be more common in certain families. Those from more troubled backgrounds are also more vulnerable to acquiring the Voices.
Symptoms
The Voices cause numerous symptoms, such as:
Delusions, hallucinations, eccentric ways of thinking, agitated movement, flat mood and tone while speaking, decreased speaking, decreased enjoyment of daily life or decreased ability to perform daily tasks, impaired thought processes, difficulty thinking and/or applying newly-learned information, withdrawal from social situations, and lack of self-awareness regarding his or her condition. Suicidal thoughts are a possibility.
Younger adults have a different set of symptoms, which involve difficulty sleeping, negatively-impacted mood, decreased motivation, impaired performance in his or her studies or trade; they tend to not exhibit the distinguishing symptoms, which are delusions and hallucinations that give the Voices its sobriquet.
Treatment
Once a person shows manifestations, there is nothing that can be done to reverse its progression. The condition almost always worsens, causing even more suffering for its victims.
Sequela
Those with the voices often turn to alcohol, cannabis, or opium to cope with their difficulties. They are also socially ostracized. Violent behavior can occur, but is not common.
Prevention
There is no way to prevent the Voices for certain, but more superstitious people make sacrifices and pray to the gods should they be worried about being touched the disease.
Cultural Reception
People with the Voices are treated poorly by nearly every culture of the world. Many explanations for the condition's causes have emerged over the centuries, such as believing the victims are possessed by evil spirits, are cursed, or are punished by crimes committed against a god or gods. Unfortunately, many sufferers are either killed and cast out from their former homes. They are often viewed as a burden to themselves and those around them and are even considered dangerous.
