Trireme

Propulsion

The trireme is powered by three banks of oars, but each ship also possesses a small sail that can used unfurled if necessary. Usually, the oars are used when the ship's officers want to reach ramming speed in battle, while the sail was used when the trireme was not in the midst of fighting.

Weapons & Armament

A ram made from wood harder than the rest of the ship's hull and covered with a thin layer of metal (such as bronze) serves as the main weapon of a trireme. Some of the crew are armed with spears and bows and arrows, but there were not many on board each ship because boarding actions are quite rare.

Armor and defense

The toughest woods, such as oak, are used for the outside part of the hull to partially defend against the rams of other triremes. Furthermore, to prevent fires from starting on board, many triremes have sections covered with untreated leather doused with seawater.

Communication Tools & Systems

Communication takes place using brightly colored flags, which are essential to perform complex maneuvers involving multiple ships.

Sensors

The officers and marines on board the trireme using the naked eye is the only way the ship can navigate, because they are no other methods - which are more sophisticated - that currently exist.

Hangars & docked vessels

Because of the ship's design, there is limited carrying capacity for cargo and necessities such as food and water. As such, the trireme cannot undertake long sea voyages and must be docked shortly after any battle in which it participates. Battles are usually fought close to land for this reason, most often in bays and narrow straits.   Both the Venians and Satrians have dedicated military ports where triremes and other warships are stored.
