Personal history

She had always been a bit of a curious child, asking endless questions, needing to try things for herself before learning her lessons. Her parents fed her curiosity and answered her questions whenever they could, giving her books to read when they were unable or the answer would be too long to explain. She had a wild immagination and devoured books of fantastical tales and colourful characters. She was also an empathetic child, noticing others pain, picking up on the subtle emotions of those around her, feeling but not always understanding the underlying tensions of situations.   A happy and friendly child she nevertheless had few friends her own age, preferring to hang about with the adults, whenever she was allowed, as she found their conversations more interesting even if she didn't always understand them. However, she often found herself needing to be alone with her books, being around people all the time was tiring and sometimes overwhelming. It was only later that she realised this was because the constant bleed of other peoples emotions wore her down and became tangled with her own. She needed those moments of solitude to just be herself.   When she was nine her parents died in a bomb explosion on a train and she, and her two brothers, went to live with their aunt and uncle in the country. Notlaura withdrew into herself unable to handle the grief of her family coupled with her own; her books now became her escape from the world. It was during this time that she had her first conversation with an animal. She had gone to her favourite place to read, which was the crook of a small tree down by the duck pond at the edge of the forest. Nestled between the branches she had paused in her reading, caught in a memory of helping her mother hang out the washing, tears trickled down her face. A squirrel had scampered down the tree, perched on top of her bent knee, and began to talk. It seemed like the most natural thing in the world to NotLaura, and before she knew it she had passed an hour in conversation with the small woodland creature before it scampered off again in search of acorns. As the weeks passed other creatures came to talk to her too, always the wild ones of the nearby forest. She tried talking to the creatures of the farm but they just looked at her with docile eyes and didn't respond.   At first, her aunt and uncle dismissed the issue when NotLaura spoke to them of her conversations with the animals, putting it down to dealing with grief and childish fancy. However, as the years went by and she still spoke of her animal friends, they grew concerned and took her to see a counselor. The counselor confirmed their belief that she was unable to handle her grief over the loss of her parents, even after all this time, and recommended regular sessions to help her come to terms with it. Soon NotLaura realised that her continued insistence that her friends were real was causing her aunt great distress, so she stopped talking of them. The counsellor recommended that NotLaura be encouraged to take up extra curricular activities with the school in order to bring more sense of normalcy to her life. This would hopefully lead to her making "real" friends and help ground her in the real world.   At first this upset NotLaura as she had less time to spend with her small friends, but she was a kind hearted soul and didn't want to further distress the aunt and uncle that been so kind to her. The counsellor also came to realise, through his conversations with NotLaura, that she struggled with her empathetic nature and helped her find ways to deal with it, ways in which she could separate her own emotions from those of the people around her. She took up running and joined the school chess club. As she moved into her mid-teens she also began rock climbing and kick boxing: she found the physical exertion and discipline helped calm her mind. Soon she had little time to visit the forest as her studies and hobbies took up most of her spare time. Upon going to university she discovered a love of debating as this was a good way to put her quick mind and ability to read people to good use.
