Causes

The Ecai have a special gland that regulates the flow of bio-energy which their bodies produce. When this organ fails, the build up of energy can have quite dangerous consequences, both for the sufferer, and for those around them. The malfunction of the gland can result from several causes.

Congenital

Failing to provide a safe birthing environment, such as undergoing the Ecai birth rites can damage the gland at birth. This is due the empathic at bio-kinetic systems being linked at birth. This damage can go unoticed for anywhere from a few months to a lifetime.

Trauma

Physical damage of the gland, such as from a stabbing wound, or blunt force is sometimes too much to be repaired. In these instances it is inevitable that the injured Ecai will begin to suffer from the condition, but at least it is known and the condition can be monitored.

Overexposure

Exposure to large ammounts of Bio-energy, electrical discharge or radiation has a severe reaction upon gland, in many instances causing it to shut down altogether. Since there is nothing to repair in these cases, the damage is permanent.

Treatment

Up until twelve years ago there was no known cure for the condition, then a scientist on Horus five made a startling discovery which led to a breakthrough technology called Microbial Balancing. it involves delivering microscopic organisms via tiny robots to the affected gland. These organisms feed on bio-energy and form a symbiotic relationship with their host, maintaining the balance of bio-energy. In effect these little critters replace the job of the gland.
Previous to this the only treatment was to undergo a procedure that could release an excessive build up of energy. This was only possible once the energy had built up sufficiently for the Ecai to notice, and was heavily dependent upon the spped at which the treatment could be administered.
