Pilgrims
Pilgrims are the military arm of the Basilica. Ranging from young to old and poor to rich, the Pilgrims serve many roles - militia, guard, peacekeeper, explorer, and so on.
Composition
Manpower
Depending on the era, Pilgrims are generally two to ten thousand in number.
Equipment
Every Pilgrim is equipped with basic survival gear, the holy symbol of Ferros, and a weapon of their choosing. Those who prove themselves are often granted stipends for supplies.
Structure
Each Regiment is under the direction of a Lord Commander, who may operate independently or under the orders of a Matron/Patron.
Tactics
Each Regiment is trained only in basic survival, self-defense, and theology. It falls upon their Lord Commander to determine their fighting stance and general tactics.
As such, Regiments range in capability from poorly-armed militias to commando strike forces.

Logistics
Logistical Support
In general, Pilgrims are not paid, but are free to keep any gold or valuables they come across - after the Basilica has levied a significant tax. Pilgrims who accomplish noteworthy deeds or remain in service for many years, however, are often rewarded with land and titles of lesser nobility by local dignitaries, all but ensuring a life of luxury in retirement. Additionally, citizens of Aurelia are expected to provide hospitality to traveling Pilgrims.
Recruitment
Recruits are taken from any person of any station, although all of the usual Aurelian prejudices apply.
