Birth & Baptismal Rites

Birth Rites are performed by the passing of the child from parent to parent over the sacred book of fire. A text filled with the information given to Adolf Stockz by Erathis.
If you are not born into the Chosen of Erathis you can be later baptised in her name by the trial of fire. One is given 4 years of Law schooling and then made to pass under a ceremonial arch upon a path of burning coals and incense. Upon completion they are then written upon by a scholar of Erathis using a dark ink that temporarily tatoos the person. This tatto is the written commandments of Erathis. If they fade before the third day after the ceremony. The person is forbidden to enter the church for 4 years whereupon they can try again.

Coming of Age Rites

At the 16th birthday a child will be given a sickle and a switch. The symbols of the farmers and the rulers. The child then burns these symbolically before a gathering of thier relatives and often some minor city officials. After the symbols are burned the child is annointed into adulthood by the symbol of the Republic of the Valley being written on thier chest in the ash and a holy oil. Afterwards they are given a laurel wreath to symbolize thier status as a new citizen voter.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Traditional Burial is the most common method. Entombing is occasionally done but is considered an uncouth display of wealth, only acceptable if you are an official of the Council of 9.
A much rarer Funerary rite, mostly abandoned in the current age, is the rite of household. When a family head dies, or the head of an institution, the person's right hand is severed and right eye is removed. These are then embalmed and granted to thier successor to allow the spirit of the dead predessecor to guide the new head in thier duties.
