S1 E57: Solutions Lie
General Summary
- The text on the floors is examined, with difficulty, from a height; a patchwork of words forms a visual image of a woman's face, surrounded by blades. The bricks are fitted together without mortar, and the stones that make up the inner part of the Lady of Pain's eye are found to be removable, leading to a dark chamber below filled with, as it seems, one of every potion.
- Many are identified and rejected; interacting with the incorrect potions activates Unseen Wardens that attack with negative energy. They're ineffective at stopping the Scale Squad, however, who resort to good old-fashioned brute force, checking every potion until Mae takes one, a dark metallic lead-like liquid, into her hand. She immediately has a vision that takes up her entire consciousness...
- As the Mae's hand closes around the correct vial, the world around her blurs and fades away. Suddenly, she finds herself standing in a vast expanse, an eerie, twilight world filled with the echoes of timeless sorrow and absolute silence. Before her, hovering in the liminal space, is the enigmatic figure of the Lady of Pain, her presence seeming to draw in all the oxygen from the space. She is a towering entity, shrouded in an aura of absolute power, her form framed by an intricate halo of blades. Her expression is unreadable, but filled with ancient pain, wisdom, and resignation. She gazes at the adventurer, a solitary tear glistening in the corner of her eye.
- The tear, radiant and heavy with her unspoken sorrow, detaches from her face, falling through the infinite expanse, casting ethereal ripples through the fabric of reality. As it falls, Mae can feel its immense potential, a power that can break bonds and restore balance. Suddenly, the vision shifts, showing a turbulent, seething lake - Borem. The tear falls into its chaotic, boiling waters. As soon as it touches the surface, an immense wave of energy bursts forth, turning the lake's furious boiling into a calm stillness. Borem is no longer a raging primordial force smashing into Tergaith from the Far Realm. Its connection is severed. It is now just a normal lake, a peaceful body of water under the silent, starlit sky. But an important piece of the vision was missing - how did the tear get to Borem? Surely it's not so simple as this?
- As the vision fades, Mae is back in the room, the vial still in their hand, the presence of the Lady gone from the room, the world, the plane. She is left with an understanding of the role this tear must play, the relief it can bring to Borem, and the immense task that lies ahead that she knows must also involve Quindarin, if any balance is to truly be restored. And as if on cue, a cloud of purple energy and anger not terribly unlike that of Borem begins approaching from perhaps a quarter of a mile off, a storm that they stop by repairing the connection back to Sylvanwroth's power source.
- The party collects the unused potions and Sylvanwroth, seeming pleased that they succeeded and seemed to enjoy - or at least survive - his puzzle. He explains that Quindarin will be after them at every turn, now, because he's smart enough to understand what they're up to; perhaps he can be reasoned with, but he seems in no hurry to give himself up to save Tergaith, or even to give himself up because it's only fair considering what he's done. Sylvanwroth pledges not to add to their troubles for now, though he says matter of factly that perhaps one day they won't all be able to exist in the same world peacefully together; the things he does would put him at the top of their hit list under normal circumstances, but for now, circumstances aren't quite normal. Until then, they can be friendly adversaries. He also says if they can't find Borem any other way - because location is a tricky thing in the Far Realms - not to be afraid to try the Children's book he lent them, Alecta's Adventures in the Wonder-Land. It's a Feywild book, he explains, but it somehow does connect to certain places in the Far Realms with a permanence he's never encountered anywhere else.
