"Blow/Wistle Away the Trouble"
Common Landers are known for their superstitions and utter fear of of bad luck. However, if you were to travel to the region you would not see anyone knocking on wood or carrying a rabbits foot — they actually do not have rabbits in the Common Land — instead you might see someong trying to "blow away" a jinx or some ill tempted fate. This is done by someone turning their head to the side and quietly blowing out a small puff of air over their soulder. Alternativly one may quietly whistle instead.
It is also very common for when one is walking in the dark to let out a puff of air ever now and again to ward off even spirits. It is also very common to hear Common Lander whistling at night.
Trivia and Fun Facts:
- According to the Deadwood Manual, spitting has little effect on warding off evil spirits. While a spirit may observe someone doing this and see that they are unwanted and leave, it is just as effective as saying "I don't want you here." Many ghost, however, find it amusing and will stay even longer just to laugh at the act.
- Due to its association with superstition, this custom — and sometimes even whistling — is banned in some Aumanite institutions.
- A better preventative of spearding disease is to cover your mouth.
History
The tradition is believed to have originated from the custom of spitting to ward off bad luck. However due to high rates of the rot in the Common Land someone spreading their siliva would likely be unlucky as it could spread the disease. Thus, blowing and whistling became a more popular and safer alternative.
Observance
