Introduction to Momentum

Momentum is a world where motion and movement is at the basis of all magic. It is a place where magic can manifest in the swing of the sword as well as a magnificent turn on the dance floor...where a gesture with the hands can bring utter destruction as well as gentle healing. It is a place of forgotten science and history, a civilization taking a step back from its former glories where great heroes took up arms against unspeakable evil. While currently enjoying an unprecedented time of peace, the darkness that once threatened the world is once again rising like smoke in the dark regions of the Far East. The sprawling city of Ferrus is the last beacon of hope for freedom in the world as the Diladian Empire moves to expand across the west. It is up to a few groups of heroes to give Terra a chance for the future.
Below are some of the basics that players should understand before exploring this setting.

A Fantasy Setting

Much of the setting of Momentum might seem familiar in one way or another, and that is totally intentional. This was done to facilitate understanding of our world through the tropes and cliches that fans of the genre have come to know and love. Elves are snooty magic users who live in the forest. Dwarves are good miners. Orcs are burly and are itching for a fight. However, things aren't without a twist. You should be able to recognize things in Momentum, but all is not as it seems...

Looming Threats

It has been 250 years since the Great Lich War which ended with the complete destruction of Old Ferrus. Since then, Ferrus was refounded on the coast of the peninsula and has grown into a booming trade metropolis. However, ten years ago, a large army of drow, orcs and goblins attacked from the north, but was stopped by a coalition of the guilds of Ferrus at the Battle of the Steel Gate. Since then, raids against the outlying communities of Ferrus have been steadily on the rise. All the while, the Diladian Empire in the West continues to expand its borders through force and devious political manipulation. Worse yet, rumors abound that the lich has been awakened yet again...

Forgotten History

Much of the ancient history of Momentum has been lost to time or destruction. Ancient civilizations constructed vast catacombs beneath the earth, the purpose of which has been long forgotten. Entire elven cities have crumbled into the void, their libraries, spellwork and technological advancements falling into the abyss with them. There are many who seek to learn about the truth and history of the past, hoping to find an ancient trinket or scroll that may help them harness and expand their power.

Ferrium is the Key to Magic

At the core of the economies of Momentum is a magical ore called Ferrium, which is extremely rare and found only deep within the earth.Ferrium is a glowing blue crystal that can only be described as pure magical essence. It is activated by kinetic energy (movement) and intent (willpower). This can manifest as a wave of a wand a word of power, or as a swing of a blade with an intent to kill. Even a small pebble of the material is extremely potent in trained hands. A case of it has enough potential energy to destroy an entire city. In fact, the destruction of the ferrium core of Old Ferrus is what led to its obliteration at the end of the Great Lich War. In small doses, ferrium has a wide range of uses in industry, onemancy and sorcery, weapon development, energy sources, and enchantment which makes control of Ferrium sources the goal of every major nation on Momentum. The mountain ranges of Ferrus are aptly named for their vast stores of the material, though recently many of the mines have been closed due to something dark being awakened in the mines below...

The Major Players

Ferrus- Founded by five merchant guilds after the destruction of the Old City of Ferrus which was once the seat of the King of the Five Duchies. It has grown into a multicultural metropolis and center of trade for Terra.   Diladian Empire- Led by the charismatic Emperor Syriax from his perch at the capital city of Nova, the Empire continues to grow its borders through might and manipulation. Their eyes have recently been set on the Five Duchies and Ferrus...   Five Duchies- These include the provinces of Riverlight, Blackton, Devonshire, Renne and the Elven province of Solaria. Each is held by a duke (or duchess) who up until recently had a peace agreement based on the ties they used to have underneath the King of Ferrus. The Empire seeks to change that...   Atavaria- An ancient land of elves and humans which has become a group of city states that are each controlled by a feudal warlord. As a whole, Atavaria has become isolationist and distant after the Great Lich War, closing its ports to the rest of the West. Some enterprising merchants hope to change that however...

Purpose
We developed the World of Terra in order to create a place for our collaborative stories to grow into adventures we could share with our community. Being healthcare professionals, we hope to present concepts of health and wellness throughout the gameworld. We attempt to do this through clumsy naming and forced metaphors as well as through subtle story points, missions, and overarching themes. We wholeheartedly believe that the best stories are those that teach you something, either about the world or yourself. So our hope is that you are not only entertained and enriched by the adventures you have inside our setting, but that you take a little knowledge back into the real world.

Themes

Movement is Magic- Arcane power in this world is activated through kinetic energy, action and momentum. Anyone in the world can conjure magic with their hands if they only break past the inertia keeping them sedentary.
Ignorance vs. Knowledge-What once was common knowledge has become lost either through destructive acts or through guided misinformation by totalitarian governments or other more malevolent forces. Knowledge in Momentum acts as a shield to the lies that continue to spread across the world.
Collaboration- In the mythos of Momentum, many of the great alliances of heroes and mythical tales stem from disparate parties setting aside their differences to achieve a common goal. In fact, it was only through a joint coalition of the free nations that the lich was able to be stopped. In the 250 years since her defeat, the countries have continued to grow further apart...
