Day of Dawning

In the northern lands of Ankorrah, the Tribes of the Sun celebrate the 18th birthday of their community members with an event known as the Day of Dawning. This event seeks to celebrate the achievement of making it to adulthood, and to symbolize the beginning of a new chapter in the young adult's life. A tradition as old as the Tribes themselves, it is a well-respected and much-awaited event for all in the community.    The event is usually held in the village centre, with all gathering around a raging bonfire as the soon-to-be-adult stands before them. Dressed in ceremonial attire, the initiate is expected to speak to the community, often expressing gratitude and humility. Following the oration, the young adult is then outfitted with their tools of choice; hunters get a spear and a bow, cooks get a skinning knife and flint and so on. A demonstration, usually prepared weeks in advance, is then to take place - displaying the talents of the initiate within the context of the chosen profession. Some choose to display martial prowess by sparring with the community's warriors, while some choose to prepare a meal for the elders to enjoy. Some have even been known to perform arcane feats for their community, although such gifts are extremely rare.    After a morning of interaction, the individual then heads to the community's shaman for a spiritual trial. These trials often involve the use of natural hallucinogenics, periods of time in isolation and a therapy-like session afterwards where the young adult discusses what they have seen and learned from their experience. This usually takes up the better part of the afternoon, with extra time set aside for introspective meditation should it be desired. Once night falls, the feast begins. A feast is prepared for all to enjoy, accompanied by music and dancing, where the newly-anointed young adult is the guest of honour. The celebrations continue late into the night, and the following morning the guest of honour is charged with the clean up of the night's events, a final act of humility to ground the individual.
