Milon
Due to its lack of major resources other than its luxury amenities, there has never been a major struggle for its control. When the first major sessions began, and the Empire began to fracture into the kingdoms of today, Milon remained a neutral ground - nominally under the protection of Kallistrotos, in exchange for use of its waterways. Despite this relationship, though, Milon remained as a safe haven for wealth nobles and merchants of all stripes, and the local elites who remained in residence would eventually consider themselves heirs to a new tradition and country. The secession of Milon was, at least to anyone of influence, the most natural political event to date, and was met with as much fanfare as the arrival of the tax collector.
Leading up to and after the formation of Milon as a sovereign nation, its ruling elites have only really had one goal - to protect their own self-interests, and utilize the strongest weapons of high society to guard against conquest by more ambitious, would-be emperors. As the best defense is a good offense, the Milonesse elites were ‘conscripted’ in one fashion or another to begin on a generations long campaign of intelligence gathering and political machinations.
Centuries later, and Milon stands as an independent kingdom, safe among the growing tensions between the other powers of the subcontinent. At the center of a thousand plots, Milon attracts nobles, merchants, mercenaries, and conspirators from all regions of the world - offering these tourists opportunities to indulge in nearly any desire imaginable. Despite its reputation, many would be rivals, or their associates still manage to fall into the orbit of Milonesse lords who are then able to leverage information to their greatest advantage. Exploited with offers too good to refuse, Milon commands an army of unseen agents around the world, poised to react to any threat to its indulgent upper class.
During the height of the Empire, Milon was little more than a small island the Turathi colonized and converted into their own personal resort. With rich olive orchards and rolling hills for vineyards, it was a private paradise for the Emperors and patricians of the empire; a jewel in the golden age of prosperity. Even when the empire began to crumble, Milon remained a refugee from the threats and rivals of outside organizations, and served as a neutral ground where new alliances could be formed away from the eyes and ears of the populace.
