The Wild Hunt
Long before the daemon war had made its way into the material plane in earnest, the aberrant demons of the far realm had reached into the parallel world of the feywild. Some fey argue that it was this first invasion that gave birth to many of the more vile creatures that are now considered natural denizens, though others consider these faerie tales of the highest order.
When the invaders first arrived, however, what was more well known is the fey, unlike the material plane, was ill-equipped to fight a war against such a savage and ruthless force. The Court of Stars, once it became clear that the invaders were not merely a passing storm but a potential all-consuming entity, were faced with a grim future without united action. According to legend, in perhaps one of the only times of universal cooperation, several court monarchs, as well as several independent archfey banded together to pool their collective magical power in the creation of a mighty protector of the world.
What was formed was not a single entity, but rather a turbulent and ever-moving storm of spirits, named the Wild Hunt. Among the various gifts the fey possessed, organization and discipline were not one of them. In order to rally disperate creatures of the realm against a singular foe, the wild hunt was crafted as both physical and psychic force that would subsume creatures along its path, and twist them towards its purpose, namely to exterminate the demonic invaders.
The Wild hunt, is therefore, two things. The first part of the hunt consists of several tribes of fey, both archfey and lesser beings, that have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of corruptive beings. Only by letting themselves succumb to the passions of predation, savagery, and bloodlust were they also able to assemble into groups sufficiently dangerous enough to quell the daemonic invaders. Many of these fey have had their spirits and physical forms reshaped by their shared bond, such that the original forms are considered lost to time.
The latter part is what has made the Hunt both successful, but also ominous. While some fey were long-sighted and loyal enough to give themselves up to the hunt indefinitely, there were still many who could not be convinced to do so. As a result, the court of stars imbued the wild hunt with powerful magic to allow them to ‘conscript’ nearby creatures to aide in their pursuit. Given the nature of Fae’n magic, this aspect is far from benign. When the hunt has gained the ‘scent’ of a worth prey, the leaders are able to drive their respective members into a bloodlust, and command them as a single mind. From there, the Wild Hunt pursues prey as a singular force, until one or the other is vanquished.
If the chosen quarry proves to be more difficult than a single tribe can handle however, then the wild hunt leader could begin a ritual known as the ‘Call of the Hunt’. This psychic aura would spread for several miles, and would slowly invade the minds of all natural creatures, calling them to the hunts mission. While strong-willed creatures could resist the call of the hunt, to do so was dangerous, as once called, all those that joined could only recognize members who had succumb as friends, and all others as prey. As can be expected, the Call of the Hunt left little room for shades of Grey.
Not bad! I've got a "Wild Hunt" in my Campaign, as well, though I haven't done too much research into it. (My players are -far- from being anywhere near the fae, outside of the minor disturbances.) Did you come up with all this on your own, or is it based in actual folk-lore/"historical" text?
So, a little of both - I did some reading, and there are several different versions of the 'wild hunt' in mythology; but nothing that was quite what I needed for my setting. So, I poached some themes, and centralized their mission around a twisted version of a planar 'white blood cell' that's designed to protect, but lacks the sort of discretion the mortal plane may have.
Nice. I like that idea. I may pilfer some of this for my own, as well. As I said previously, I haven't done too much research on it, myself yet. I just know that I'm going to have one. If I do snag any, I'll be sure to leave a note so others can reference to your works, as well.
Much appreciated. If you do, and write some additional items, feel free to tag me back, and I'll credit back to you as well :)
