17th Praesidium Guards Tartessos Foreign Liaison
Overview
The 17th are known as the Welcoming Mat in the City of Tartessos. They work as both a Watch force for the Foreign Quarter but also as spies keeping an eye on the activities, behaviors, and customs of the foreigners who are visiting, building up a strong knowledge-base of their cultures to make future infiltration easier. This makes the 17th one of the most knowledgeable organizations concerning other nations and languages in Atlantis.Composition
The Legion is formed under the trident of the Guard Units, and carries a standard adorned by the Praesidium Roman Numerals derived from the texts found in the Military section of the Royal Library of Atlantis. The 17th Praesidium Guard is split into 6 Cohorts - each Cohort is a different specialisation of the Guard. But the composition of the company is far more varied than other Legions, ranging throughout all of the classes.Proof of Skill
The 17th - is primarily a Guardian Legion, they were established for the express purpose of guarding ore and bullion shipments from the Tartessos based mines and foundries, but evolved beyond that to develop into an intelligence gathering and management Legion that functions as the lynchpin in ore manufacturing and export from the area. To gain entry the character must show proof of a valued skill - this can be anything from successfully guarding a shipment to being skilled in appraisal or even in mining of the ore itself. The exact skill needed by the legion at any given time varies but it makes it one of the easiest legions to join.Cohort Divisions
The X's - the Tens
These are the combat based cohorts of the Legion and are normally warriors and rangers who are accustomed to close quarter combat. The Slash Cohort is renowned for its reputation of never taking prisoners, and the Back Slash Cohort are famed for pre-emptive attacks - often attacking bandit camps before the bandits even know what shipments were moving.
The V's - the Fives
The Fives are the intelligence gathering cohorts of the legion - they are mainly made up of Bards, Rogues and Rangers, and actively seek out the sources of attacks on the trade and mining trains that move up and down the passes in the area. They often work in tandem with the Back Slash Cohort. The Fives are the Left and Right Van of the Legion - using their own parlance.
The II's - the Eyes (the Twos)
These two cohorts focus on administration - they are mainly dealing with training of animals, men, and supplies - as such it is mainly done by mages and priests who function as much needed support units in the field but are equally valued working behind the scenes.
