Alembic
Overview
The alembic is a type of distillery, that has been used for centuries already. It is used extensively in Alcohol manufacture also.Naming Conventions
It's name comes from the Aubaydi word الإنبيق, al-inbīq, meaning a cup or beaker, and a distillery or still and is said to further derive from Ionic: ambix, ἄμβιξ meaning "still" In Lateen the Aubaydi word was used as its basis, resulting in the word "alembicum".
Components
The alembic has three components:The Cucurbit (Aubaydi: ḳarʿa; Greek: βῖκος, bîkos), this is the still-pot and it holds the liquid to be distilled. The Cururbit is the component that is heated by flames.
The Cap, in Aubaydi the Inbiq (إِنْبِيق,) itself attaches to the mouth of the Cucurbit and it funnels the vapors away from the heat source along its Solen (σωλήν) "Tube" into the third component.
The Retort - which in Aubaydi is known as the Qabila (قَابِلَة) or Angos (ἄγγος) a receiver of the vapors - and acts as the condensation receiving component. This part can be sold separately but is often included as a standard part of a full Alembic item.
