The Dwarves & Religion - "The Old Gods"

When it came to the original dwarves and their religious beliefs, they were a bit different from the other races. While similar in some regards (i.e. belief in Mepha the Creator), they differed in that they instead believed in a collective of famous mortals who were influential or achieved some great accomplishment in their mortal life. A great warrior, for instance, if his feats were legendary enough, would earn him eternal admiration such that he would be considered a god. The same was true for other great craftsmen, like blacksmiths and armorers. These once-living legends are now referred to as The Old Gods, since much of the worship of these gods is very isolated, or nonexistent outside of small, remote dwarven civilizations.    At the same time, however, the dwarves did recognize the life essence and supernatural presence of energy that existed outside of individually extraordinary mortals. They felt a spiritual connection to physical objects, as well as ideals and beliefs. For example, they greatly valued the mountains which they called home, and regarded them as a living breathing entity. They believed that an invisible, sightless being protected their mountain, and all that was held inside of it, and that it was worthy of their admiration and worship. Other concepts or ideals that they believed were governed by a supernatural power were things like luck, greed and avarice, industry and wealth, the fortunes of safe travel, and all manner of the horrors of the underdark. In this sense, they share very similar beliefs with what is commonly referred to as "The New Gods" - only that the dwarves use different names when referring to that which they are worshipping.
