Balls and Galas

Balls are one of the most important aspects of upper class Novandrian society. At such a dance, a person can show off their poise, manners, grace, and charm, while meeting a wide variety of other individuals. This is especially important for those of marriage age, and balls are seen as a prime opportunity to meet potential suitors.   Invitations to a ball are sent out two to three weeks in advance of the date, to allow attendees ample time to arrange for their clothing, accessories, and other essentials. An invitation to such an event is highly coveted, for to even be invited, a person must be of good social standing and known to have a decent moral character; ruffians and scoundrels are not invited to balls.   Upon arriving at the dance, an individual is announced into the room and given a dance card; these cards have lines that a person may use to write the names of those who wish to dance with them, ensuring that they have room for potential dance partners while avoiding overbooking themselves. Dancing is the focal point of the entire evening, and though a person may excuse themselves to rest or to partake of the refreshments (usually punch and small snacks) on offer, they should try their best to be as available as possible.   Balls are most frequently hosted by upper class families as private affairs, especially those families with children eligible for marriage; by hosting their own event, a family may ensure they invite those candidates that they find as acceptable choices for their children to associate with. However, some clubs and societies associated with the upper class will also hold galas, inviting any eligible person in the area. These events are massive and put an individual even more on display, owing to the less personalized nature.
