Downtimes

Downtime in Terranon is considered those times between games where your character is doing something "off-scene". These are activities that generally don’t need a full scene run by a storyteller, but instead simply need answer and approval from a storyteller. Players are welcome to write these up if they wish, but please check with the storytellers before writing the scene. If a storyteller believes the downtime requires a scene they will let you know, and a time can be scheduled for it. Actions like sowing rumors, carousing for information, or doing research generally just need an email or private message to the right person rather than a full scene.   Downtimes are completely optional. Players can take part in them if they wish. Players are not required to do downtimes in order to advance their storyline and are not penalized.   Xanathar's Guide to Everything (XGE) and the Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) have a list of common downtimes players can do. Details concerning the various actions are listed below. If you wish to do something that doesn’t fall within this list please speak with your storyteller. Resolution timeframe and resources required may be modified by the storyteller depending on the stated goal.

Intent

The goal of this is to provide a guideline of what can be done in downtime. Ultimately, these are intended as guides and as a way to replace narratively unimportant scenes or as a way to provide guidance for players to self write events that occur in downtime with storyteller approval.   The goal is not to bury storytellers in monthly downtimes or add a “required paperwork” component.   You may do many of these actions without gaining a mechanical benefit and without filing a downtime.

Downtime Specific Notes

Rivals (XGE) - Though players may gain rivals through actions they take, doing downtimes will not automatically cause a player to gain a rival.   Complications (XGE) - The optional downtime complications may be used at Storyteller discretion, but will not be used every time.   Building a Building - Details to be worked out with storytellers on a case by case basis, though “Building a Stronghold” on page 128 can be used as a general guideline.   Buying and Selling Magical Items - Please see Trading and Crafting Magic Items. Storyteller will decide how long it will take to acquire the item.   Carousing (XGE) - Per the book. See Page 126. The cost in resources will be decided by the storyteller based on the action taken. High-society carousing costs more than low-society carousing.   Crafting an Item (XGE) - Per the book for normal items. See Page 128. For magical items, see Trading and Crafting Magic Items.   Crime (XGE) - Per the book. See Page 130. Desired activity will decide the resources required and payout if successful. Storytellers have the ability to be flexible with the value of the stolen item   Gaining Renown (DMG) - Renown isn’t mechanically tracked but taking actions will be noted by storytellers for future potential interactions within the game.   Gambling (XGE) - TEE does not use gambling mechanically. Characters can RP gambling via their lifestyle.   Competition - Renamed from Pit Fighting (XGE). This covers taking part in competitions at multiple levels from underground boxing, to royal cricket matches. Payout amount is at Storyteller discretion. See Pit Fighting Page 126.   Relaxation (XGE) - Per the book. See Page 131.   Religious Services (XGE) - Per the book. See Page 132. The effects of favor are at storyteller discretion.   Research (XGE) - There are no costs associated with research, so long as the character has reasonable access to a university or public library. Gaining access to secret lore, restricted sections, etc. may require rolls or gold expenditures based on the storyteller’s discretion.   Running a Business (DMG) - This is generally covered by your lifestyle. Additional gold can be earned per the book. See Page 129 of the DMG.   Scribe a Spell Scroll - Please see Trading and Crafting Magic Items. For rarity, see page 200 of the DMG.   Training (XGE) - Per the book. See Page 131. Desired area of training will decide the resources required.   Work (XGE) - A player may use the Work downtime to earn additional gold for a week's worth of work, rolling Strength (Athletics), Dexterity (Acrobatics), Intelligence using a set of tools , Charisma (Performance), or Charisma using a musical instrument resulting in the following:   1-9: Poor (14sp)
10-14: Modest (7gp)
15-20: Comfortable (14gp)
21+: Comfortable+25gp (39gp)

Writing Your own scenes in Downtime

If players desire to take a downtime action just for flavor without mechanic benefit you don't need anyone else to approve the scene, but grabbing a friend is a great idea.   Some examples of such.
  • Shopping for a magical item but not buying one.
  • Going carousing but not seeking NPC benefit.
  • Gambling but not seeking to gain additional funds beyond what your current lifestyle provides.
  • Barenuckle boxing match in which you don’t gain additional funds beyond what your current lifestyle provides.
