Lighting Technology

Historical Equivalent: Gas Lamps, Oil Lamps, Candles, Electric Lights   Magma Lamps are magma elementals encased in reinforced glass cubes. While running, Magma lamps are extremely hot, and the elemental capacitors on the top and bottom of the cube keep the cube from setting its surroundings on fire. These cubes, when not encased in their special housing, are carried in tongs with an insulated grip. Although not bright enough to light up a room, magma lamps are aesthetically pleasing to watch, and can come in multiple colors. Their primary use is factory lighting or heat generation, but they can also provide decorative ambiance in high-end establishments.   Lightning Bottles are lightning elementals encased in bulbs or tubes of glass. A lightning bottle has an elemental capacitor that stores the elemental in the bottle’s stopper. The primary benefit of a lightning bottle is that the bottle can be turned on and off as needed and controlled remotely. Lightning bottles are usually very bright, but constantly emit a buzzing sound.   Everburning Candles come in a few different forms, and are the most common type of Eletech light in Eisen. Whether set in a lantern, designed to look like an oil lamp, or set in chandeliers, Everburning candles use fire elementals stored in simple elemental capacitors to keep a normal flame alive without using an external source of fuel. Everburning candles have many of the drawbacks of an open flame, including a single candle not providing a lot of light on its own, or being blown out, but the more expensive they are, the brighter and higher quality the light.   Radiants are a brand new application of eletech. The new radiance quasi-elementals eat darkness and come in a fascinating array of colors that can be changed with different applications of magical circuitry. These elemental capacitors are encased in specially-formulated glass crystals. When set in chandeliers, the crystals light up entire ballrooms with an even light, and a single crystal set in a lantern can brighten up a large area.   Rarity. Eletech lights are commonplace across Europa, though different types of lights have different applications. Magma lamps and lightning bottles are commonly used in industrial applications, while expensive radiants are limited to nobility and aristocracy. Even the poorest household has at least one everburning candle.   Bound Elemental. Fire, Magma, or Lightning are common, though new Radiance elementals are brighter and more efficient.

How are they operated?

Eletech Lights are very simple to operate and control (DC 5), though more complicated uses might require a higher difficulty. Many eletech lights can’t be turned off and will use some other method to control their brightness, such as wick length, covering, or shade.

Where are they found?

Eletech lights are found throughout Eisen, from the poorest slums to the most luxurious mansions, but not all types of eletech lights are available to everyone.   Magma Lamps are primarily used in industrial applications, their heat serving a dual purpose in many factories, though creative uses for smaller magma lamps have made their way as decorations in high end clubs and bars. Magma lamps have also found use in the underworld, as the dim light they shed can easily be hidden.   Lightning Bottles are most commonly seen in upper-class street lamps, but their bright light is also extremely useful for specific types of factories where the bright light helps the workers see fine details. Some middle class homes may have a lightning bottle, but high quality, and expensive, everburning candles are far more popular. One benefit over any other light is their use in large spotlights and lighthouses.   Everburning Candles were the first type of eletech lighting, and the cheapest today. Even the poorest homes have at least one everburning candle. Everburning candles come in many different styles, from simple tubes placed in common candlesticks to fancy lanterns, lamps, and chandeliers. It’s common to see everburning candles in low and working class street lamps.   Radiants are owned solely by the aristocracy and nobility, as even the cheapest radiants are far too new and expensive a luxury. These crystals, recently invented in the Eisen universities, are extremely popular among the nobility, and incorporating the crystals into beautiful artwork and centerpieces has become a status symbol to show off a House’s wealth and power.
