Opera

Originating in Vodacce in the 1500’s, Opera has become a respected and influential art form in Europa. Emphasizing singing excellence, it is widely regarded as a more diverse art form than, say, ballet, because the ability to sing is the most important quality, rather than concerns related to appearance, race, etc.   Within the groups of bards, singers, and other performers, those who favor performing in operas are viewed as an idiosyncratic and eccentric bunch. They have developed their own terms and manners of speech, in-jokes, and traditions in their world that tend not to be found elsewhere. (For instance, they will spit on the ground next to each other as a sign of respect and a wish of good fortune, and view the phrase “good luck" as a deadly insult, because a truly skilled performer doesn’t need luck - both things that have sparked a duel on more than one occasion.)   Talent is the most important quality in the world, whether it is singing ability for performers, composing, performing in or running the orchestra…flamboyant personalities and eccentric personality traits are common, as long as one has the ability to back it up.   Opera is usually a grand event for attendees, and it is common to host receptions beforehand for the upper-class attendees, or for the company to invite patrons and well-respected and influential attendees to parties with the company after certain marquee shows. The capitals of Montaigne and Vodacce take it a step further, and will host grand opera festivals, where a whole multi-day festival will revolve around one grand performance, or longer, especially for multi-part Eisen and Vodaccian operas, some of which can take days to perform fully.

The Bardic Society tends to dominate the industry, due to the emphasis on singing ability, as well as for composers, directors, etc. The collection of Guilds which support the performing arts also exert influence for the technical side of the Opera world, as well.
