The Unbound Lazarites
At first glance, a secret society of ‘necromancers’ seems ghoulish, and something that would strain the tolerance of society past the breaking point. And while there are members who take it too far, the members of this secret society immerse themselves in the study of death, undeath, and resurrection.
The number of ACTUAL necromancers in the society is actually fairly small - most of the members are clerics, doctors, eletech scientists, scholars, and serious hobbyists. They devote themselves to the study of death as a process, as well as the condition of undeath. Some members seek to combat death, others to harness its power…the society does not concern itself overmuch with the ‘why’ of its members, as long as they remain discrete.
While the group is slightly less ‘secret,’ and more numerous, in the Summerlands, membership and ‘cells’ are spread throughout Europa…and beyond, if rumor is to be believed.
The Lazarites know many would be uneasy if they were discovered, so their paramount tenets are ‘discretion and secrecy.’ Members are allowed to study whatever they wish in their own homes, or in the well-hidden meeting places of the group, but they believe the open and flagrant use of necromantic power will invite attention they seek to avoid at all costs. This is not to say members have not…gone too far, and acted out publicly, of course…just that their fellows either kicked them out beforehand, or were careful to remove all traces of said person’s membership after any…unfortunate incidents.
