Knight of the Bridge
In any society there will be those who, whether for malice or opportunity, act against the well being of the whole. It has therefore become a universal necessity to have those who work against the former, lest all societies crumble.
In the village of Oldcastle, situated in Darkwater Valley along the river of the same name, there is one who the people look to for arbitration, as they have looked to his predecessors for centuries. The Knight of the Bridge has not been given authority by god or king, but by the consensus of the village and all its people. Serving the purposes which, in another place, would be the responsibility of a sheriff, judge, protector, or though rarely, executioner, the Knight of the Bridge is trusted and respected by all. When farmers have a dispute over land, or herdsmen over the parentage of a new litter, or the tavern keep and patron over an outstanding tab, they know that if they cannot resolve the situation themselves they can take it to the Knight and expect a fair and final resolution.
Though the current Knight of the Bridge, Louis Toussaint, has followed his father as he followed his father before him, he believes the position was never meant to be hereditary. Though his son would surely make a fine replacement as Louis begins to feel the effects of old age, he has long since decided the line shall end with him. There are several promising young men in the village who Louis has been instructing in the skills needed, such as riding and patience, but he has yet to decide which of them would be most suited and perhaps as importantly accepted, as the new Knight of the Bridge.
