Emperor Valens

Emperor During the Final Crises

History

Emperor Valens took the throne of the Cyrillian Empire in the year 70BF after a power vacuum was left in the Empire when Emperor Commodius was killed at the battle of Hellepolis (Ostroholt) fighting invading Ostrogar tribes. His reign was a period of continuous rebellion and collapse on all fronts. He was a skilled leader and put down many crises, however, whenever he would fix one problem two more would rise on the other side of the Empire. He was popular during his time as his reign was active in comparison to his predecessors, however, the Empire's resources were too taxed at this point for him to stay the Empire's steady decline. Valen's only son died in battle against the Pretender Severin Severas in 65BF and Valens died the following year without heir. His successors were not as skilled and the empire began to collapse more rapidly from this point forward.

Opinion During his Age

Valens was liked by most of the Empire's nobility, however, the common folk were less enthusiastic about his reign. This was due to the constant warfare that plagued the border regions of the Empire and the high taxes Valens needed to levy in order to quell rebellions and invasions.

Modern Opinion

In the modern day Valens is seen as one of the Emperors who led to the eventual collapse of the Empire of Cyrillia. He is seen as a capable Emperor but not suited to deal with the crises of the time. In particular he was faulted for not declaring an heir which led to a shirt civil war that further diverted the Empire's scarce resources from the borders that were starting to collapse.
