Lolth, Drow Goddess of Assassians, Chaos, Darkness, Evil, and Spiders

Queen of Spiders, Queen of the Demonweb Pits, Dark Mother, Mother of Lusts, Lady of Chaos, Weaver of Destiny, The Weaver

Lolth is the goddess of the Drow, and essentially the very thing that holds traditional Drow society together. Or what HELD it together. Now she has been imprisoned by some terrible and powerful creature that flooded the Underdark, and nearly wiped out the Drow people as a species. While many Drow still follow her, the clerics of Lolth have noticed in their ever increasing horror, that her power is very slowly waning. If she is imprisoned for too long, she may no longer be able to communicate with the Drow. Her people now lay fractured and divided, some squatting amongst refugee cities of surface dwellers, others trying to live as pirates or isolated villages, To make matters worse, a religious schism has been happening, with mainly the younger generation of Drow seeking to embrace surface dweller gods and goddess instead of Lolth, while the staunch traditionalists seek to keep her in power, leading to heightened religious tensions amongst the Drow community. Many of the traditionalists claim that when Lollth is freed she will reap a bloody tide against the surface world and those that dared abandon her for other, weaker gods. However many believers are even scared of Lolth returning, for how will she judge her people that now squat amongst the roofs and walls of weaker species, and live only because of their generosity.   Her origins are not exactly clear. To the Drow, she has always ben there, waiting for them to cast off the shackles of wider elven society and meet her fall below the surface to find their true purpose. Some surface elf scholars argue that she may have been related to the original elven pantheon, perhaps even the child or even lover of one of the gods or goddesses. However, mysteriously, all records of what may have been Lolth were lost during a freak and sudden record burning where no cause or culprit was ever found. The single surviving document that may have any relation to Lolths origins is an account of the Elven goddess of shadows, Ceòlia, granting to a mysterious woman only referred to as, the Widow, a mask made of spiders silk, and a form to hide herself in.

Tenets of Faith

The religion of Lolth, is a strange one to outsiders. While technically the church of Lolth has no real tenants of faith, aside from the disobeying of Lolths clerics being a guaranteed death sentence and sacrifices to Lolth, it does have some guiding principals. Lolth, hates weakness, and therefore it is that the only the strong shall rule, while the weak be left to suffer and die. In this same regard, competition is no holds barred between  rival noble powers, if one is defeated then they are proven to be weak and Drow society left better off thanks to their timely removal. The truly strong are rewarded for their strength, to better laud it over the weak and downtrodden. Another core aspect of her worship is the hatred of being content, of thinking that you are fine where you are. A Drow should always scheme, and plot to have even more than what they already have. So even the once leaders of the now fractured people would scheme to take over more and more territory, and own even grander amounts of slaves and to have the most vilely decadent feasts and lifestyles.
