Mote Rasp

This is not a planet where humans are meant to live. As such, the atmosphere outside of the carefully regulated Domes consists of a higher percentage concentration of carbon dioxide than a human is meant to breathe. It's survivable for a few minutes, but otherwise you need a respirator.
Another option is to take Raclamote  in some form (a native growing herb that helps with the rapid breathing and nausea and just generally helps you survive the experience.) (Wights consider it a major intoxicant because of how it helps with oxygenation.)
Of course, Raclamote Rasp, or Mote Rasp, is a factor in why any sensible human should be wary of it.

Transmission & Vectors

The condition originates from the ingestion of the raclamote plant. It doesn't happen every time someone uses raclamote, but in approximately 1 in 3 uses. Some people are more prone to suffering from mote rasp than others, and a few who can ingest raclamote without ever seeing this side effect, but the latter is more rare than the former.
Mote rasp cannot be transmitted to another person.

Causes

The exact triggering cause of mote rasp was unknown for a long time. It can be presumed that there is some other trigger than simply ingesting raclamote that causes mote rasp, since it can be so inconsistent, but it is unclear if there is an additional environmental factor if it's a genetic factor.
Later data demonstrates that this is caused when someone has ingested raclamote and [local sweet treat] within ten hours of each other.

Symptoms

Mote rasp manifests as very similar to hypercapnia (too much carbon dioxide in the blood), with dizziness, headache and disorientation as early symptoms. At this point it is considered to be early stages.
Mid stage: coughing, shortness of breath, fading vision.
Late stage: loss of balance, fainting, arrhythmia.
Extreme: fever, coma, death.

Treatment

Treatment involves rest, in most cases. Over-the-counter medicines to treat the milder symptoms, if it is a mild case.
However, if the condition has progressed to the coughing stage, then more aggressive and specific treatments are required.

Prevention

There has been some research into developing artificial forms of raclamote, but these efforts are halfhearted at best, because most people don't ever leave the dome, and those that do stick to respirators. What few attempts have been made in synthesizing an artificial variant usually results in something that causes similar symptoms.
