A massive earthquake shifts the world and serves the purpose of burying the Fergana, completely halting all work on it.

The ship wasn't close to being repaired. Various struggles in building the Dome and surviving on an alien world meant that focus was lost on that particular task. Not to mention that the Stellemancer's data for the past few generations has shown that it might take three centuries to work out a way around the cosmic effect around the planet that caused them to crash in the first place.   This is a major disaster that seriously knocks down the population and the Dome, and forces a reorganization of how things operate.
