Speckled oak

Properties

Material Characteristics

A wood with a very deep brown colour, dark enough to almost be considered black, it also has specks of amber and gold within, giving it the 'speckled' appellation.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Speckled oak is fire resistant and an excellent magic conductor. It is also immune to the shifting effects of the Shifting Vales.

Geology & Geography

It is found primarily within the Jagged Peaks and the surrounding woodlands, both to the north and the south. Though it can be grown elsewhere, it requires a lot of water to thrive so it is usually found or farmed in swampland, whether natural or man-made.

History & Usage

Everyday use

Speckled oak is rarely used in construction despite its fire-resistant properties because it is far more valuable for wood-based armament. As it is highly magic-conductible, it can be enchanted easily and will also naturally retain enchantment longer. Highly skilled woodworkers will not only be able to make weapons but also armours out of speckled oak.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Speckled oak is considered sacred by both the Order of the Vales, the followers of Matexism, many a druid factions and the Elven race in general. Stories vary greatly but a reoccurring tale is that Kaenesh, as he prepared to return to the Shifting Vales to defend the Realm, infused an oak tree with his power to make His longbow out of it; the wood gained its special properties from this act. It is also believed by many druids that the World Tree is in fact a speckled oak.   The Order of the Vales favours this wood for weapon-making in general as it can withstand the frequent shifting within the Vales without the weakening that can affect other materials (whether produced or natural). The Elves have a long tradition of offering speckled oak weapons as gifts to high-ranking officials, believing that the best of the best should be honoured with the wood that was crafted by their All-Father (Kaenesh).

Distribution

Trade & Market

Though not exactly common, speckled oak is not hard to find around the Jagged Peak. A flourishing trade for it has been in place in Pinerest for over 500 years. Pinerest Market is the foremost supplier of speckled oak wood and traders from across the Bridging Lands organise caravans trading that wood.
