The Kaiser's Own Guards, or, the Kaisereigene Wachen
They have fought in a hundred battles, and lost only one. In their garrison lie the paintings of those who walked among them, many of whom are counted as the greatest soldiers and generals the 12 Worlds have ever seen. The Kaiser's Own Guards, or the KOG, are an elite group of infantry, tasked with the protection of not only the Weslich Empire's Kaiser, but also many of its Kings, Dukes, and other aristocrats, as well as many prominent politicians, including the Imperial Chancellor.
Just over 120 years ago, during the First War of Unity, the King of Prustein ordered the raising of 3 regiments of infantry, the King's Own Guards, the King's Grenadiers, and the Kings Foot Guards. They were part of the invasion force commanded by Generalfeldmarschall Leopold von Kreuswitz, which invaded the nation of Acuera, where the 3 regiments where engaged in the Battle of the Lake, where they were outmanoeuvred by a local force, more knowledgeable of the terrain, resulting in the the KG and the KFG being so badly mauled they were subsequently disbanded, and the KOG having to be sent back to garrison for 6 months to lick its wounds. Of course, the war itself was a technical 'success' for the Prusteinians, since the Acueran people decided to join them anyhow, as a semiautonomous state, with its own representative at the Imperial Diet, and even armed service in the army. However, the regiment itself would soon have better luck, as in the half-dozen ensuing wars and skirmishes, it would grow a reputation for being in the thick of the action, such as in the Siege of Turan, or the Heights of Pelinegro , in the 1st Vostoy-Prustein War, after which it would earn the moniker Kaiser's Own Guards.
However, while the Guards had survived decades of war, what it would not survive was the change in the Empires policy regarding warfare. After the founding of the United Commonwealth, the principle of 'not going to war with other countries just to gain more land' began to catch on. And connected to this principle was the idea that the entire United Commonwealth would have a single Army and Navy. Side effects of this plan included that certain units with particularly vibrant heritages, such as the KOG, were allowed to be left under the full rule of their countries government, and normally outside the chain of command of the actual Army, though this can change during wartime, if the nations government decides that. Hence, while the KOG would see a few more battles, notably in the deserts of Shatihab, where they served in the 54th Infantry Division, 18th Corp, the unit would be relegated to both ceremonial and protective duty. However, even in those 2 activities the regiment keeps its skill, having thwarted 7 assassination attempts on various dignitaries, and putting on annual parades in every corner of the Empire.
