Overview of the Wildlands
Dangers of the Wildlands
The easternmost part of the continent is known simply as The Wildlands. Only the very brave or the very stupid dare to travel here.
It is a land dominated by wondrous and dangerous beasts. Attempts have been made to settle the land but none have succeeded.
The northern part of the region is a vast archipelago. Dozens of islands, some still uncharted, make the perfect hiding spot for many bands of pirates and thieves.
The southern part of the area is dominated by vast prairies and rolling hills. Here most of the creatures are to be found. Fantastic beasts and monsters roam the plains and most would make a quick meal of any who’d wonder haplessly into their territory.
Along the northern part of the Lake Kea is a marshland. It is said that the congruence heavy water from the lake has sapped into the marsh making it possible for nightmarish monsters to be birthed there. Very few who venture into these swamps make it back to tell the tale.
In the center of the plains there is a very unique phenomenon of legend. Seemingly in the middle of nowhere there is a pit of unknown depth. It is said that it is impossible to see the bottom when one is standing at the mouth of the hole. The pit has never been explored.
Most avoid the wildlands altogether, trade routes bypass the region entirely. Some brave adventures will trek into the Wildlands but many find that the risk doesn’t outway the rewards. There are many rare beasts and plants that can only be found here and many scientists and alchemists would kill to get their hands on some of these specimens.
Rumors from the Unkown
The Wildland’s mystery has given way to many fantastic and sometimes horrific legends. It’s common for adventurers to disappear in the apparent abiss of the region. Those that do return tell tales of wondrous beasts that roam there. Owing to a lack of successful scientific expeditions in the area, most of these tales remain unconfirmed and have given way to folk legend.
One such legend tells of a mist that rolls throughout the hills in the south. The mist is said to move on its own accord, giving no heed to the natural weather patterns of the area. From within the mist nearby adventurers have said they hear wails and cries of distress. No storyteller has been able to discern the identity of the criers and any who are caught in the mist are never heard from again.
Another legend is that of a stranger who will suddenly appear in the middle of a camp without warning. The stranger has taken many forms. Sometimes it appears as a human, other times as an Ophidian or a Synthoid. One tale even has it appearing as a Primordial. It has been both male and female. Everytime the stranger appears it greets the adventurers in a pleasant and friendly manner, even when they try to attack it. It warns them of some impending danger about to befall the party and gives instructions on how to avoid disaster. The stranger predictions seem to almost always be accurate, dozens of parties have been saved by following its advice. There is one story from a sole surviving adventurer who claims that his whole party was wiped out save him due to following the strangers advice. (In actuality there are two entities. One gives instructions that will save a party and another that gives advice to destroy it. The motives of these entities are unknown.)
